Christian Rock bands??

Anyone,

What is the purpose of Christian Rock as a sub-genre of music? I happen to be christian by upbringing (catholic), but to be honest I have no interest in music that's specifically focused on religion.

But I was also wondering, why is it just Christianity that has its own sub-category. eg. I have never heard of a Jewish Rock band or a Muslem Rock band, ever. Is there any particular reason for that? Do they even exist?

Just curious....

Thanks.

It's all in the lyrics and the message, I think.

As long as the music kicks ass and is not trying to be preachy or "save" you then I'm all for it. In fact, there's a great sax player called Phill Driscoll who played Christian music and he sounded amazing.

It's a free market. It exists because there's a group of people who like it. You're just not in that group. Making music focused upon religion is certainly nothing new. Look at Gospel or Soul.

I'm sure they exist in countries where they are the dominant religion. I guess they exist to uplift and encourage the spirit of the believer and also as a tool for outreach to non believers. Take a band like Stryper for instance. They took on a genre like hard rock/metal which I would wager it's safe to say that it is predominantly non-Christian and used the music as a tool to reach non believers with the gospel and to let them know that God loves them.

Self-made agnostic is how I'd probably describe myself these days. I have zero interest in organized religion, however I'm perhaps not ready to throw it all away (the belief) completely...

However if there is a God out there, he must really be shaking his head at a lot of the modern religions today.

Re: Christian Rock bands??

We have a guy in Australia called John Saffron who has done a couple of great series. His first one was John Saffrons Music Jamboree. He did a story on there where he tried to push a Jewish boy band Jewtown to an American Christian record label, they wouldn't have it purely because it was Jewish!

He's also done a series called John Safron vs God where he goes around the world and looks at different religions, very funny stuff.

Cuz there are some christian listeners [just like me] that don't want to hear offensive lyrics/music.
Some bands lyrics can be very harmful and discrimatory to someones ears...

You can also check my christian band with influences of DT and some other non-christian bands. Since it's in Portuguese, you can hear it without 'labeling' it as christian or pagan or jewish or so!
