Devin Townsend - Synchestra
I bought this album two days ago and I've been listening to it for two days non-stop. Unbelievable album. Stunning, beautiful, diverse. SSV is also featured on it in one track (you'll immediately know it's him).
My personal favorite track is Pixillate, because of that Eastern sounding riff in it.

The whole album is a freakin' masterpiece. Easily the best album I've heard in 2006 so far.

I got the cd/dvd a few months back, not expecting much. I was pleasantly amazed at how good this album is. So many good tunes, and diverse too. Have you seen the video for Vampira, it's pretty funny.
I was so impressed by this album I've since embarked upon buying his back-catalogue.

Re: Devin Townsend - Synchestra
I just listened to some of his stuff and I'm pretty amazed. I love the atmospheres he creates.
Back to listening some more...

Re: Devin Townsend - Synchestra
I have "Terria" (partly because of Drew's recommendation) and it's excellent - I really need to get more of his albums

Re: Devin Townsend - Synchestra
Ocean Machine is still IMHO his best non-
Strapping Young Lad
album. He's gotten more diverse and sophisticated over time in his arrangements and whatnot, but it's such a beautiful album. Even the hidden bonus is amazing.

FWIW, I consider Vai's solo on that somewhat of a low point on the album, and usually hit "skip" when he starts. I just can't get into either his current tone or the quirky-for-the-sake-of-quirkiness thing he's got going these days.
That said, I'm glad he played on this album, that Dev invited him and that he agreed to do it. Whatever I may personally feel about the artistic direction Vai's going in these days (and don't get me wrong, I'm glad he's doing his own thing, it's just not for me), I think there's a nice circularity to hearing them collaborate again, after all these years and on something so upbeat.
Myself, I love the opener, "Let it Roll." It's the last thing I ever expectedto hear from Devin. "Pixellate" is probably #2, for completely different reasons - it's exactly the sort of tune I expect from the guy.
And Terria is, in fact, a masterpeice.
