i've just accepted that all 5 of them have magical powers, far beyond the mere perfect pitch!

It's been proven time and time again that PP is more nature than nurture.

He might have been more drawn to music at an early age because of the perfect pitch...not vice versa.

There's a guy in my program who has perfect pitch. I don't envy him for a second, the slightest out of tune note anywhere and he hears it, and definitely doesn't enjoy it.

Maybe he needs better players in his program

just kiddin'

PP, like any other gift, needs to be harnessed and refined. It's one thing to have a natural gift, it's another to develop it into something useful.

You can have a handful of Uranium and look for ways to build a nuclear bomb or you can look for a way to cure Cancer, AIDS, Diarehha, etc.

It's not enough to have it...it's what you do with it that counts.

~K

PS: No, I'm not advocating trying to build a bomb OR cure diseases with Perfect Pitch. It's not possible. i tried.

There's not a problem with the players, it's the piano in our one classroom that still hasn't been tuned, and some of the demos we've listened to in class as examples of the process from demo, to recording, to mixing, to mastering.

(and yes, I know you were kidding )

Does it matter? Would knowing that Rudess could discern an A# from an A by ear 100% of the time change your appreciation of their music?

Whoever that prick who keeps advertizing these "perfect pitch" courses in the back of magazines REALLY rubs me the wrong way.

yeah my Aunt has perfect pitch and to her the slightest out of tune note
is painful and horrible. She has been working with music all her life
and heard tons of em... I guess there´s a downside to everything.

The point the originator of this post may be stabbing at is that James LaBrie definitely doesn't, and he's wondering if anyone else in the band does, and how they put up with him when he was having tuning troubles (much better with tuning lately from what I hear, may have something to do with the fact that they now use in-ear monitors and have no speakers on stage, other than guitar and bass cabinets).

I dnt mean to change the subject but souless drivel?????? you think a track like "in the name of god" or "trial of tears" lacks soul??. I guess its each to there own but i think thats madness.

I feel that way too. At first I was impressed of their musicianship but then it just got old. It was like putting in musical notes into a computer and having it perform it. It sounds square and soul-less.

I also agree. It's a big part of the reason that my taste has moved away from most technical guitar playing aside from Vai and Johnson. So much attention is given in the performance, recording and mixing of these technical performances that the soul seems lost. Really, how many polyrhythmic drummed, unison keyboard and guitar shredfests can you actually cram on a record and claim it's different from the previous one?
