Dream Theater

What songs would you recommend, that needs only a 6 stringed guitar for the guitar parts. I wanted to learn the glass prison, but i dont got a 7 string.

Re: Dream Theater

Go for some of the older stuff. Erotomania would be a great guitar oriented song to learn. Plus, most of their older stuff is better than their newer stuff (in my opinion).

Re: Dream Theater

yar, it's funny how they complained about being made comercial in the 90's and when their given the power over their music they sell out. I learnt dance of eternity on six, very fun to play but learning to live would be a good first song to try, not too technically demanding but still alot of odd timings.

Re: Dream Theater

not thinking in terms of particular songs here, but I'd head in the direction of Awake for that sort of thing...

Re: Dream Theater

Pull me under is a nice one to learn, if you wanted something a bit more technically challenging, try Erotomania or Metropolis Pt 1, they have some pretty hard passages in both.

Constant Motion is a pretty cool one to try from the new Album, a friend and i jam out to that one every now and then, its alot of fun

Re: Dream Theater

From "Awake" 6 o'clock is a nice tune. It all depends on your personal skills. Heck, Silent Man, is a great song for acoustic! Under a Glass Moon... Now, to be able to play that correct, well I'd say, you're already quite good! Innocence Faded has cool licks in it and, yeah, Erotomania is a great exercise for picking and timing...

I'm really sorry to be the one to break it to you but nowadays metal = money, those guys aren't screaming into mics and playing heavy riffs because their lives are crap and they're angry about it, they're doing it because you're angry and will pay to hear angry music. So if a band wears cammo, band shirts and steel caps then they've probly sold out.

DT scraped a living (by music standards) making decent music and now they need to buy their kids mercs and metal is the way to do it.

i disagree, their music is very different to mainstream metal, and they still write music the way they want and dont try and being in control stopped them being forced to follow musical trends like when they were forced to have that triggered snare sound on I&W

you dont have to be angry to write good metal either

in response to the topic, constant motion off the new album systematic chaos is a good bit of six stringage
