Dream theater Metropolis Dvd

I bought this dvd today and i must say that it blew. The singer sounded like some 80's knockoff that needed to be singing for Yngwie. The stupid animations were not very good and could have been left out to say the least. I bought it thinking this: Petrucci and Portnoy, this must rule. Then when i got to my friends house and popped it in the first couple of minutes they jammed and it was cool, but then the singer stepped in and started singing. His stupid shirt with his leather pants was a double negative and was almost equally as bad as his stupid stage antics. He was way too old to be in that band. I believe that Portnoy and Petrucci are wasting there talent in that band and need to start making instrumental albums. Anybody else feel this way?

PS:Remember this is in my own humble opinion.

yes it's a good concert but not the best dvd i own. i totally agree with animations, they couldn't have been any more stupid. labrie isn't very old though i like the concert's last parts actually, JP solo, through her eyes, one last time etc. i don't like hypnotherapist's voice, on the album it was just fascinating.
i like finally free the best, and one reason for that is the drum solo. i had collect my jaw off the floor actually.
it's not only MP and JP though. John Myung is one of the greatest bass players out there and jordan rudess is just amazing.

JP already has some albums with jordan rudess. for example an evening with jordan rudess and JP... he also plays on rudess' solo feeding the wheel album on one or two tracks. on terry bozzio's on the drums which means you will be blown away...

joe's san fransisco dvd is the best dvd i ever saw, though. maybe my fanaticism for him clouds my vision but that concert was just great. i'd like to be there. and G3 1996 dvd is far greater than metropolis...

Probably I'm misunderstanding, but it seems you didn't care about the music, and totally freaked about the looks...if that's correct, you should buy a Justin Timberlake DVD, not a DT one.

LOL

Hmm, I have it too and I have to say that the first few times I watched the DVD I wasn't too charmed by all the stuff you mentioned either. But after all I really like the music, and the DVD as a whole.

LaBrie can be quite off sometimes live, and that makes him the first person to be thrown out if I had to. But the others (Rudess, Petrucci, Portnoy and Myung) are killer musicians IMO.

I don't care about leather pants or something, I like Yngwie too most of the time, for me it's all about the musical aspect. The show is important too of course, nobody wants to look like the Dire Straits as on their Alchemy Live DVD; that one'll crack you up (from a musical viewpoint it's briliant though).

correction I meant the Scenes from N.Y DVD...
I havent seen Metropolis. Maybe I oughta read the topic
more carefully next time. Sorry...

before I watched the DVD I listened alot to the record and I was so excited to see it "Live" so to speak. And I was utterly disappointed.
I wish I never sawr it coz it certainly altered my view on the band and petrucci in particular. So labored it hurt even me...
poor to adequate, at best.

gah I canīt believe they had the nerve to put it out.

I'll go against the grain and say its a phenomenal DVD. 2 hour full album set then another hour bonus set and that still wasn't the full gig. I think it wayed in at around 3.5 to 4 hours. Of some of the most complex music around.

Re: Labrie. Some love him some hate him. But I will say this. I've heard some SHICKING bootlegs of him when he's been off, during the Falling Into Infinty Through to Metropolis 2 tours...however I have seen them live 3 times now starting with the 6 degrees tour and every time he has been so spot on it makes me marvel.

He can be having a bad night, however when Labrie is on his vocal abily and sound is breath taking.

And of course the awesome foursome behind him are all bloody machines! Despite what the commentary says.

BRING ON THE BUDOKAN DVD IN OCTOBER!!!

I enjoyed it... It wasn't perfect, and I too tolerate more than appreciate labrie, but as long as you took it as an artistic work in its own right rather than a documentary of a live performance, it was pretty interesting.

I suppose someone has to put in the obligatory "I miss kevin moore," though, so here goes- Metropolis II is probably the best work Rudess did with DT, and its undeniably a solid album... But Moore's work just MADE "Awake," and I miss his influence of the rest of the band.

oh well.

I loved the bonuses (Change of Seasons, Learning to live, etc).

I also liked their previus VHS concert (that i recorded on a DVD cause VHS dont last for too long).

I like labrie when he sings, but when he starts to scream he can be anoying.

Big agreement. And when the vibrato gets too heavy. But overall, he's one of my fave singers. I just ignore the bad boots, and luckily he's been on both times I've seen him.

I enjoy the (ahem) VHS a great deal. DT is a great band, and Metropolis is one of their strongest works. Rudess is simply one of the best musicians that I have ever heard, and has done much to raise the level of musicianship in the band. Portnoy, petrucci, and Myung are monster players, and I like LaBrie. My five month old daughter will stare at the video with open mouth amazement - much like I do.
