Ah you must have been on another planet! Or just a more casual fan, more likely!
Well they called it quits in 2001 (having not gigged since the end of their second last album's tour) but then they probably realised they had a huge following, so they did some surprise Norwegian gigs, some US dates, Wacken in Germany (which I was at), some more Norwegian festivals and then London Astoria.
Many people are speculating that that Astoria date is quite likely their last ever gig, or at least the end of that brief reunion. Another album or another tour would be really anti-climactic and a lot of people don't like the idea of another album seeing as they weren't impressed with Prometheus. I'm sure Ihsahn's own work and the existing Peccatum/Zyklon albums will keep us going for long enough.
One thing that would be fantastic (but unlikely and only enjoyed by me) would be if they did what Metallica did with a symphonic orchestra. Emperor have as many if not more classical elements than Metallica, I think the only issue would be mixing the sound, and venues.
