Who invented the technique? Mike Anthony and Rudy come to mind. Was this a jazz thing also?

You may well be right with that one...now that you mention it I remember him doing that in little dive clubs in Yonkers, NY in '77 or so, back when they played on Fridays and Zebra played on Saturdays (and my band was sneaking in with fake IDs!)

WORTHLESS TRIVIA:
Mark was the second bass player with Twisted and he was blind as a bat - had coke-bottle glasses he wore between sets and Dee told him to stay in the dressing room so as not to embarrass the band.
