Friday Night in San Francisco by DiMeola,McLaughlin,DeLucia

!!!
Good lord, i think i'll wait for the rest of my melted brain to drain out of my ears, then go break my all of my fingers. There is some absolutely OBSCENE playing on this album. Possibly the most insane things i've ever heard on an acoustic, mostly courtesy of Mr. DiMeola. What a beast!

Good album, that one and Aerial Boundaries by Michael Hedges - and you'll sell your acoustic guitar.

I've got the transcription from Friday night in SF. No tab. Lots of black spots...

Yep, great album. Worth checking out the video meeting of the spirits too - John McLaughlin, Larry Coryell & Paco De Lucia - very cool.

It was only when I saw a couple of clips of JM that I realised that the whooping on FNISF is not just because of the crazy playing but also because they're spinning their guitars around!!

Check out all these clips - my fave's Cherokee

Doesn't all that acoustic shred get tiring after 10 minutes? I could take about one song before it started sounding like unplugged Yngwie warm-up exercises. Maybe I didn't listen enough.

I don't think you could call it acoustic shredding. Just bloody good playing, fast or not.

Tiring? Nah, sounds like they improvise a whole lot. Lots of humour and funny phrases, almost like talking among friends. As with all music, it's easier to hear it as "good" if you "understand" it. Not trying to put anyone down.

This was my second di Meola album...it blew my mind when I first heard it, and it continues to thrill.
So much music, beautifully articulated, irrespective of the speed...

I would recommend it to any music lover.

Then you are clearly not listening well enough. Awesome album, I grew out of most of DiMeola's music, but his acoustic stuff still blows my mind. That Piazzolla album is very cool too...

meh..I didn't like it at all. For the same reason I don't like Petrucci or Michael Angelo...it's too fast. It becomes noise like a buzz or a cell phone ring.

I'll take Mark Knopfler or Eric Johnson's over that

jem7vwh, Eric Johnson is my favourite guitarist. I'd definitely take him over any "speed freak".

Wow, those vids are awesome! "Black Forest" especially rips, as does "Noonward Race". JmL is a true legend. Just Check out "Bitches Brew" with Miles Davis and "Birds of Fire" with Mahavishnu Orchestra for further proof.

Re: Friday Night in San Francisco by DiMeola,McLaughlin,DeLucia

I got this album when it came out, back in the day and love it. I think one of the best things to come out of this album (that rarely gets mentioned, however true) is that it really raised people's ideas of what an acoustic was capable of doing. As a result, more players started demanding lower action higher up the fretboard, brighter response (through scalloping braces and forward shifting the X braces on tops), and more availability of models with these changes. We've got all of that now. Acoustic guitars almost certainly got better as a result of this particular album and its enormous popularity. You can fly on nearly any new top line acoustic, and many mid level guitars as well. That wasn't really the case in the 70's.
