G3 DVD is here!

Well, ordered it early from sonymusic.com and it arrived last night complete with extra DVD cover authographed by all three Gs. Pretty cool. To my untrained eye, the filmography is superb, especially compared to Vai's most recent DVD. The sound is amazing with one exception: was Dave Weiner even there? You can hardly hear any of the backup guitarists. The same with Joe's set. Maybe it's my home theater setup, but I don't think so. Otherwise the sound quality is excellent. You can really feel the drums and bass.

The extra "fretboard" camera angle is a nice extra, although it's only on a few songs. Otherwise the "bonus" extras suck and seem like an afterthought. Also, Vai's set is way too short although the first song with the triple neck is amazing.

Looking forward to Glen's review.

You're too late Glen.
Sony have run out of the signed booklet.
I'll just pick my copy at HMV on Monday.

I got the DVD yesterday at lunch and watched it all the way through just to see if I was in it. My purchase was based solely on the novelty of having been there. I can honestly say that I probably won't be watching the DVD again. It was ok I guess, but it's the same old Satch songs and Yngwie is one of my least favorite performers. What was shown of Vai's set was pretty decent. The filmography was fine, and the audio was ok aside from what Jason said about Vai's backing band being a bit buried in the mix. There just seemed to be WAY too much Yngwie there- listening to him isn't something I enjoy, but watching him make a fool of himself was extra-painful (though amusing). The "jam" was a joke and could have easily done without "Rockin' in the Free World", but...to each their own.

Visually, it's a fine DVD. The sound had a couple of issues, but was overall decent. Not something I'd watch over and over, but kind of cool to have for novelty alone.

Mine arrived last night (autographed, of course). For as disappointed as I was with the initial track selection, I am eating my words right now. I agree the sound appears a bit muddy on a few songs (I haven't watched it all the way through yet), but the camera angles alone make up for it. As much as I enjoyed Steve's Astoria DVD, this film crew used on G3 at least knew how to operate a camera . Steve's set is utter perfection. Although it's not listed, the triple-neck solo piece starts off the set and segues into "I Know You're Here". I think I watched that opening piece 2 or 3 times already. Just stunning. Joe's performance is excellent, too. Seems like the G3 tour really lit a fire under him. He just doesn't stop smiling and he's really digging into his songs. I particularly enjoyed the outro jam on "Starry Night". I haven't watched Yngwie yet as I was too entranced by my other DVD purchase yesterday: Opeth: Lamentations Live at Shephards Bush. .

Just FYI Steve mixed his own sound so if you can't hear stuff you know who's to blame.
Picking his own 25min set and mixing it were the only things he was alowed to do by Epic and it was him that decided to have 3 long songs rather than 5 short ones like Joe and Yngwie.
Joe might have had more input in the DVD but I doubt it because if he did it would have been 2 DVDs with full sets.

I have to agree with Chris as stated above, "Rockin in the Free World" is a JOKE! And two MORE Hendrix tunes.... Joe's profromance has been the same sence I seen him back in '89. Don't get me wrong, I love Joe, but nothing new here. The ONLY tune that makes it worth while to buy is "Get the hell Outta here" Steve and band really shine on that one!! If you set the "audio" to PCM Stereo, you can hear all the guitars on different speakers...at least on my system.

Just my 2 cents.......

I picked up both the DVD and CD yesterday. I've watched the DVD, but haven't heard the whole CD yet. I have no complaints, except maybe less Yngwie, more Satch & Vai. I would've preferred the full sets, as I've said before. The filming was very good and the sound was good too (Some feedback during Yngwie's set on the CD, and his sound was a bit thin, but it's a strat I guess).

I loved Satch's new flamed guitar. Very nice. I missed some of the detail when I was there for the G3 tour.

Except to say I enjoyed seeing him live, I won't go into the Yngwie stuff again. It's all been said.

Did any of our fellow jemsiters happen to get their faces on the DVD?
