Guitarist Satriani sues Coldplay

Well, a few people on you_tube have been posting edits of both these songs spliced together... They do sound similar!

http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7766683.stm

Basically Coldplay's latest hit (used on Apple adverts) Viva La Vida sounds a lot like Satch's If I Could Fly from 2004.
What do you think?

Jim

Sorry, someone else just posted a new thread on this topic.. close please...

Nuts, do you reckon he decided to sue after seeing the Youtube clip or he knew it straight away once he heard the track. I would assume he would have heard the Viva La Vida and went, hey thats my melody.

I wonder how they prove that Coldplay stole the melody.

Re: Guitarist Satriani sues Coldplay

Maybe Joe just called them on the phone and asked them? It'd be kind of weird if they had said "Yeah we did steal it. You got a problem with that? ". lol

Anyway, if they proved they actually stole the melody then I could understand this sue more. But still... It's kind of a waste of time, imo.

I don't think the laws have to prove whether it was intentional or not, just who had the copyright first, and then if the notes per measure warrant a monetary remuneration.

Re: Guitarist Satriani sues Coldplay

While it's entirely possible that they just came up with that on their own, I would think it highly unlikely that that's the case. I also think he wouldn't decide to sue without having a pretty good idea that he would win. Looking at previous bands that have sued over this or that with regard to their music (read Metallica) I don't think Joe would want to totally ruin his image without a solid case for winning.

Check out this youtube comment:

Its funny seeing all these Joe Satriani fans and their uber-aggressive comments that, in some cases, don't even mention Coldplay. Time to lay off the coke, kids. And here's a bit of information for you: Joe Satriani isn't all that good on a guitar.

The bad thing is, they actually sound pretty good over top of each other! I think Joe and Coldplay ought to get together and jam this one, and everybody wins!

Yet another reason why comments on youtube are about as useful as crap in an outhouse.
