Hand Joints...OUCH!!!!!
Hello there,
Its been a while since I posted in jemsite, glad to be back..
Well the thread title says it all, the joints in my hands, both of them are aching like hell.. Do you have any remedies to this..?
Its come to the point where playing is really uncomfortable...
It all started after I stopped playin for like 3 months and then started to pull Alcatrazz (Malmsteen) Too young to Die, Too drunk to live... I forgot to get my hands into hot water after playing and went and played for hours. The pain started in my left (fretting hand) index finger, I supposed it had to do with the arpeggios and
sweep picking
but now is in EVERY finger.
I also happen to work on a computer centre :
www.cecalc.ula.ve
and my Father, he's a neurphysiologist, says that I have started to develop a Carpal Tunnel on my picking hand. PLz Advice me as soon as you can. You can also write to
einar.coutin@gmail.com
Thanks in advance.. A LOT!!!
Einar Coutin
The proud owner of a cheapo Lyon Guitar(from Washburn) ripoff from a 70's Fender...with only 21 frets.. PLanning on getting a GIO though, If my hands allow it.
Cya around. aah btw the frets are also worn out...need to change them, lol

Re: Hand Joints...OUCH!!!!!
I would say stay away from guitar for a while until your hand doesn't hurt. Then what I like to do is get some gloves and put them in the microwave or oven for a few seconds, until they are toasty, but not burning your house down
. Wear them until they aren't warm anymore and your hands should be pretty loosened up. This makes playing feel better in my hands, less of a "binding up" feel in the when attempting more strainuous (sp? lol). I like doing the same for when I'm done playing sometimes. I got the trick off of a little 6 year old pianist that was on the tonight show once and he was wearing gloves.

No offense, bro, but if your dad is a neurophysiologist, why the heck are you asking US what to do?

Simple, cause YOU'RE the guitarrists and you have the EXPERIENCE, and EXPERIENCE is VALUABLE... What else for could it be, If I could I personally ask Leo Brower..
Its OBVIOUS YOU HAVE NEVER SUFFERED ANY FORM OF THIS HAVE YOU..?
BTW I'M NOT OFFENDED AT ALL, i can see you're too minded (abstracted) to be offended by you...If I were like you, as I was, I'll say you have a point, but NOW I DON'T...
Thats All I have to say about it, peace..
Besides That The Carpal Tunnel and the joint pain are two different things...And also AS Far as I know, Forums Are for Sharing, right..?

Re: Hand Joints...OUCH!!!!!
Years of hard labour work will really mess up your carpal tunnels. My hope is that your hands are still just agitated.
You will not be able to really play guitar when the pain is still there, listen to your body, but you'll need to speed up the circulation of blood in your hands in order for them to heal faster. Also eat the right foods, take some calcium/magnesium pills and drink lots of water.
Once they're warm: stretch them and gently massage them.
I use a gyro excerciser (Powerball) and go running through the woods, which helps.
TYPING IS VERY BAD FOR YOUR HANDS RIGHT NOW!!! You should only make slow, wide movements with your fingers at the moment.

Re: Hand Joints...OUCH!!!!!
OOOOO I've had tendonitis in my foot when I was like 10, I couldn't release my toes from a clenched position for a week without it hurting like hell. I just let time deal with it, I found nothing to speed up the healing. As for the glove idea, anything that won't catch fire in the microwave for a few seconds would work. I also heard you could put dry rice in a sock and put it in the microwave, then after making sure it's not going to burn you, put your hand in it for a few mintues and that should work. I haven't tried it yet, but I might now that I just recalled it. Happy healing!

Re: Hand Joints...OUCH!!!!!
A friend of mine had tendonitis from a large amount of typing in a short period of time - he got a glove that he wore from his doctor that was supposed to relax the muscles. It seemed to have worked, he was good in a matter of days - try asking about one of those eh?

Re: Hand Joints...OUCH!!!!!
I meant no offense, man, I just figured your dad would have seen stuff like this before. That, and you can get some pretty wonky med advice on non med forums (well, on med forums, too, i guess, so...)
Anyway, glad you're somewhat better. I actually DO have some issues, mostly my left wrist. As I "circle" it it pops & crackles, and I can feel tendons/ligaments sliding in & out of place. Usually it's pain free, but sometimes it gives out when my hand is bent back and I'm holding myself up (makes activities with the wife interesting)
Old age? Too much jujitsu joint locking? too much guitaring & foruming? I may never know..
