Has Vai ever mentioned which non-Ibanez guitars he uses when recording?

Obviously he doesn't use the JEM exclusively when recording his albums, I've never heard of him making comments about the other guitars he uses, maybe he is forbidden from doing so by Ibanez.

Does anyone know of any other guitars that he uses?

i don't think it's forbidden by Ibanez, as many other endorsees have no problems stating that they use other brands guitars to record. anyway, i can't help you on this. sorry.

Check out vai.com's guitar photo galleries. He has a ton of other guitars and I believe some of them have comments about being used in particular settings. That being said, I get the feeling he uses his JEMs and UV because they're his favorite and not because of any sort of contractual obligation.

On the subject of Fender - Noel Gallagher recently stated that he recorded most of all Oasis albums with a Strat, but just didn't like their image for live work.

haha maybe, im going off an interview i recently read which stated that steve wanted to buy a vintage strat for the crying machine. Steve saved up 20 grand and went to hollywood in search of a vintage strat, and ended up buying a "strat knock off" that he fell in love with that was only 500 dollars.

It was "The Boy From Seattle", and it ended up being a $400 MIJ Strat. Look up the audio commentary on the ALS DVD.

I remember that he used his first guitar (A Fender Strat which he modded extensively) on the Real Illusions album.

The "sticker strat" is still considered Vai's "number one", and gets plenty of use in the studio.

Is that the natural finish strat that has a floyd rose? I've seen that on some Zappa vids if that is the one you're talking about.
