Re: Hey Satch, whats the deal?

I love the new Satchafunkalous CD. There's a Jeff Beck feel to some of the songs. I've had it in my car for a while now. Crystal Planet was his best.

Re: Hey Satch, whats the deal?

I've found the Satchafunkilus cd to be quite expressive and completely different than every other Joe cd of past. The amount of thought that has gone into every song is impressive and it gives the listener a different perspective on Joe's music writing abilities. Perhaps I'm biased because I saw him last month and got to hear his insight about the new album along with how he develops ideas, etc.

Joe is also at the point in his life in which he has nothing to prove to anyone but himself, so many people are not going to find his work appealing because his fingers are not flying on the fretboard like they used to. One suggestion to all those who would like to understand the record a bit more would be to check out the podcasts. There have been instances in the cd where I've heard Joe playing either a couple of chords or simply replicating the same type of sound in the style of Billy Gibbons (in Diddle-y-a-doo-dat, around :22 to :40 reminds me of cheap sunglasses) and David Gilmour (in Come On Baby, around 2:40).

You're not alone. I found his latest album to be a huge disappointment. His last three albums (ITLIS, SC, and now his latest album) have been the same way, with exception of a song or two. I remember reading an interview with Satch where he was criticizing young, up-coming instrumental artists. He said most of them sound like they're jamming over a backing track. Satch's own criticism has caught up to himself.

I never complain about Campitelli on drums, I like how he sticks to a groove without throwing in a fill every two seconds. His drum work on the latest album is too laid back to the point where it sounds dull. It only adds to the end result sounding of sounding like Satch jamming over backing tracks.

There are a couple good songs on the album, but they're typical Satch at this point. 'Revelation' is nice, sounds like a track that was left off of SC. I like 'Come On Baby' because it sounds like older Satch without sounding like he's jamming over a backing track. 'Andalusia' is alright, but again it sounds like Satch recycled old material and turned it into a jam half way through. The acoustic riff sounds exactly like what he was playing all throughout the old "The Satch Tapes" video. From 4:37 to the end of the song, it sounds like he mellowed out 'Rockin' In the Free World' and jammed over it for two+ minutes.

The deal is......he's continuing to explore his own musicality and musicianship.

And i love it

For all those who just want SWTA yet again......well it was remastered and re-issued so that should satisfy those who fear something new

Folks go oh **** I am getting old. Well it does beat the other option.
lol, this describes me almost to a T. even with the ibanezes, as my main ibanezes are ones with the viper profile, which is very stratty feeling. and i've been gassing for one of the new faxed explorers...so i guess the mellowing out effect is age related!

Re: Hey Satch, whats the deal?

Well... I love over the top guitar music meant to be listened to by guitarists. Don't get me wrong, I love a well written song, but who writes good songs anymore?

My songwriting heroes are Marvin Hamlisch, Barry Manilow, Paul McCartney, Elton John, Carol King, Paul Williams, John Denver...

So Vai who is not the greatest songwriter, but has the technique and arrangement sense, and Satch who has the technique and a better understanding of the raw song structure, but not the arrangement sensibility of Vai

Have you really listened to his last three albums (ITLIS, SC, and Prof. Satchafunkilus...)? He barely brought anything new to the table in any of those releases. Each album has been typical Satch and sound like a run-on from one album to the next.

I'm far from close-minded when it comes to music, so you can't try to pull that bs with me.

I totally agree. I love Plant's later solo stuff- really good and underrated IMO. Of course I'm 31, so I may just be old...

Why is it that you feel he needs to prove himself to you or anyone? Joe has nothing to prove, and if you don't like the new album; hey man, it's a free country, so whatever floats your boat

Where and when did I ever say he has to prove himself to anyone? I happen to be a huge Satch fan. I most likely wouldn't be where I am today as a musician if it wasn't for Satch.

What's wrong with criticism? Only people with good things to say about the album are allowed to speak up?

He puts on a great show. I've seen Satch live a few times and I'm always amazed at the control he has over the guitar.
