Hey Satch, whats the deal?

Just bought Satches new CD. Haven't bought a Vai CD since Ultra Zone.

What happened to Satch? Is he so bored with playing songs that the average person would enjoy. There was only one song that I though a non guitar player would like. JP and AT would easily appeal to non players. I'm sucker for radio frendly guitar music. I just don't enjoy some of this 'eccentric' sounding stuff. Summer Song, Satch Boogie, Always with you..., etc. is great music. What happened to writing songs like that? And Vai? I can only listen to about 10percent of his music. JP Suspended Animation is amazing.

Am I the only one a little fruatrated with our guitar hero's latest releases?

Re: Hey Satch, whats the deal?

Maybe I'm becoming a bit jaded as I close in on 30 but while I still buy all the releases by those guys, I'm just not grabbed by them in the same way I used to be. I'm finding myself getting more enjoyment out of things like Robert Plant's voice on his later solo stuff, the drum sound on Nuno's Dramagods album, and Devin Townsend's backing vocals on Synchestra. I don't know if my heroes are changing or if I am, but I kind of miss being really excited about a new Satch release.

I think you are

For my part > I think the latest Satch album to be one of his best. Love every song on that album and even my girlfriend likes it (she dislikes most other Satch albums).
As for Vai: I do not think his music is ment to be "friendly" to the listener. He does write very complex stuff and you have to be in the mood for it. It is definately not mainstream. Same thing with many Jazz artists... When did you last hear Joe Zawinul played on the radio? However I like Vai's recent albums, especially the string theories, the concert was totally amazing.

Of course if you are the maintstream radio listener, this music is not for you. And I am totally glad it is so. Why should everyone write 2cent production Britney Spears Songs. It is good to see that at least some people do not sell out and stay true to their music and when they play concerts it is not a show off, but a celebration of sound.

Re: Hey Satch, whats the deal?

I actually really like the groovin mood of the new Satch album

I do see what your saying though as the older albums (IMHO) are better.

The Extremist, Time Machine, Blue Dream era was my fav (and still is) but as they say, change is inevitable.

I for one find it strange how it seems that in many cases musicians seem to regress rather than progress. Maybe they just run out of material and ~SPARK~ and it just becomes a job.

But I do like the new Funky Satch. Good road music

I'm surprised that I'm really not bothered about turning 30 at all (in July)... It'd probably get to me if I hadn't done anything with my life but I have a gorgeous lady, an adorable baby, and I pay the bills writing for guitar magazines, so yay me! Hehehehe.

I haven't heard the new Satch yet - I pre-ordered it on Amazon and the delivery date is May 28. If I knew it'd take that long I'd have spent the extra $20 bucks to buy it in Australia when it came out.

30 didn't bother me much. We're in the prime of our life I'm a ~crab~ as well. B-day July 21st. hmm...lots of 7's there.

I'm 7 days from your b-day in the 7th month. 14 = 7+7, 21 = 7+7+7

We got 7, 7's goin on here

The new Satch isnt astounding, but worth the buy (imho) Actually I'm groovin to it right now

~ROCK~

BTW - which guitar mag?? Sorry if I missed that somewhere along the line

I think everyone will agree that Satch has never been afraid to experiment, as is evident with all his albums. Every one of them are unique and it appears that each is a representation of how he was feeling at the time he wrote them. Not every musician has that gift of expressing themselves the way Satch does, and every record of his has something different to offer audiences.

If all his records sounded just like Extremist or Crystal Planet we'd be talking about how monotonous his music is getting

I find that the older I get (gasp) the more my taste mellow out without the need for drugs I really don't care about shredding anymore but truly appreciate good musicanship and talent witch Joe has in spades.

Young me loved thin necks, high gain, and pure shread on Ibanez Guitars. Now I like mellow tones, OD just enough to "flavor" the tone and the feel/tone of classic guitars like Strats and Pauls.

Folks go oh **** I am getting old. Well it does beat the other option.

Really dissappointed with new CD. very repetitive riffs with waht sounds like improvised jamming on it. No catchy lines to remember. No where near the standard of Gilbert's Silence Followed By a Deafening Roar

Lol I am 34 and I loved Strats and Pauls when I was young and have since then matured to appreciate Ibanez guitars

"Revelation" has some pretty catchy lines (almosts sounds Coldplay-ish). But yeah, I liked the album, just not THAT much. Same thing with Gilbert's new album. It's just OK, IMO. Not bad, but not great either.

This pretty much sums up the typical reaction to the (progression/regression) of guitar virtuosos

It's like where do they go and which avenue do they take to avoid repetitiveness??

After the success Satch and Vai have had, I think they've just decided to play what THEY like to play and going the direction they want to go rather than worrying about what the public wants. It's like......"hey you either like it or you don't" but I'm sure having fun doing it regardless of your opinion

(and IMO we are lucky that they are *still* doing it)

Kudos to Vai and Satch

I can relate. I always loved my Telecaster despite my Ibanez fixation, but at the moment I'm all about Les Paul Specials with P90s.
