I should be so, so, so much better for how long I've been playing, but what the hell. I used to do the "i suck, i suck" thing, but I got over it (when people started agreeing with me ). I still suck, I just doesn't bother me as much anymore. That's the nicest thing about the guitar: it can take about 4 months to get good on it, but a lifetime to get great on it.

Decent enough to hold my own but humble enough to know there is ALWAYS someone better (so why waste time and energy on anything but being the best you can be as a player and as a person for that matter!!)

Man, what a cool topic!

Plainly saying that you play all that stuff (malmsteen, petrucci, thal)
is quite easy, but do you walk the walk?

send me a clip, then you've got my vote.

I've been there myself, hoggin' the metronome, trying to play faster
than buckethead on steroids, but as people tend to do, i machured,
and involved myself much more into jazz. chick corea, lenni kalle,
tordendal kinda stuff.
find that stuff much more challenging

I do find myself playing alot of slow clapton, hendrix, SRV, slow yngwie and classical stuff, and just improvising what i feel. But I am mostly focused on building technique, learning scales and modes all over the neck, learning patterns and ruites that i like to move across, build up my speed, my capibilites, basically working on everything i cant to, to strech the most, make quick jumps, etc. I really dont need to work on my phrasing, as for the first like 3 years all i played was hendrix, clapton, SRV, Grateful Dead, Alman brothers, b.b. king, and alot of blues improvising, so now its time to really improve!

An example, perhaps.

Another thread with a link to an MP3

(Sorry to cross-post; seems on topic here, though.)

Well, I thought I was decent, but aparently my neighbors think I suck. I guess it just goes along with being new in town.

From what I've heard on the forums here, a majority of people on this site are very good players, but have been able to stay grounded.

Dont you just LOVE neighbors?!?!?! lol I had some horrible neighbors when I lived in an apartment a long time ago. Right before I moved out (actualy the day Imoved out) I plugged my guitar into my half stack, pointed it at their wall, and just CRANKED IT and played the star spangled banner. You could not breathe in this place without them complaining!!!!

I've played for 25yrs and my singer tells me I suck all the time,he tells the drummer the same and the drummer tells the singer he sucks, but nobody listens to the drummer anyway. So apparently, since I suck,I fit right in here.

no one sucks, there's just varying degrees of improvement neccessary for different people.

Some need more work than others, but hey, we all gotta start somewhere!
Remember, at one time steve vai picked up a guitar and held it backwards because he didn't know any better.....he had to learn to change strings just like us!
