I don't stink, I'm actually wearing some great smelling cologne. However, my guitar playing has seriously taken a dip. I never thought of myself as great or anything, but I was happy with what I could do now and then. I haven't played enough lately, as in the last two years. I'm slowly starting from scratch. Reading my Zen Guitar book again and not using anything but a guitar and maybe an amp. Trying to take a new approach on things, and maybe it will work.

LOL - It's all relative isn't it?? Sometimes I've sucked so bad I became a black hole & other times I felt like I had been touched by the hand of 'da man!!

What does all this mean you may ask yourself?? Same as it ever was.

- trippin' the light fantastic...

I've found that, if I happen to be playing guitar and someone just kind walks up to me - they usually think that I'm the greatest living guitarist if I play a song that they know... Now if that person happens to play guitar I have found that playing in a few different styles can really get their attention. I've really given up on playing my best stuff for anyone - except for myself...

Oh, and the JEM7 VWH always gets oohs and aahs...

Fair play to the 15 yo! If I was playing when I was 15, I'd be chuffed if I could play Yng licks......

No need to rip him - that's the problem with text, there's no emotion.....we just read it and if we read it as egotistical then damn him to hell!

Anyway - onto the point....I used to practice all of the time and after a while I didn't really see any improvement. Anyway, after 4 years, I basically ignoed guitar and played semi-pro football (soccer) for eight years.....

I've packed that in and two years ago I picked up my guitar and joined a band......didn't work out, no gigs etc. So the singer and I formed a covers band. We now play every Saturday, most Fridays, some Sundays and some Thursdays.

In the six months we have been doing this - my playing has improved 10fold.....phrasing, speed, clean-ness of legato, having to use pentatonics, blues scales (which out of principle I would never use)....hell even my singing......

....and my point - get out there and join a band and play live....you'll learn a hell of a lot more than sitting in a bedroom! (and the sights are better......last Wednesday, a girl 'popped out' of her lace top whilst dancing, and on Friday another girl flashed us her g-string!)

this is very true in my experience as well, especially in a two guitar band, where you are both lead.

Well, 17 years and counting and I've decided I don't want to be Eddie, Satch or Vai. They hurt my fingers, take far too long to learn and, well, much as I love their playing, all I want to do now is ad lib! I've never been diciplined enough to learn stuff and I'd much rather just do everything freeform. If that can take me close to the likes of Steve Lukather and Larry Carlton's playing, I'll be over the moon.
