I just interviewed John McLaughlin!

I didn't even know about it til yesterday afternoon. Very inspiring. I feel like it was the best guitar lesson I ever had, yet it was just an interview over the phone. We talked about improvisation, fusion, synth guitar, modelling software, the blues and a bunch of other stuff. The interview will be syndicated in a few print mags here in Australia but I'll put it on my blog too a little while later.

I've only recently started listening to him over the last few months, and I told him this right off the bat (best to be honest, right?). He seemed to really relish telling me all this stuff to check out, bands, albums, musicians, etc. Amazing guy, and I can't wait to see him live in February.

Incredible! To me, as far as fusion goes, John is it. I love his albums with Mahavishnu (not the reformation effort of the 80's), and his work with Delcuia, DiMeola, and McLaughlin.

How do you manage to get these interviews?

I write for several guitar magazines, so often the interviews are arranged by them through promoters, etc. I write a shortened version for print, then I put an extended version on the site if I can get time to transcribe it all (as with my Satch interview which was 500 words in the magazine, but 3,000 on the site, and ditto with the Michael Angelo Batio interview I'll put up in about a week - gotta do Steve Lukather first!).

I've also had a few independent artists contact me specifically for the blog. In some cases though I contact the artist directly. I can't name names at the moment just in case it doesn't happen, but hopefully this afternoon I have someone else on assignment interviewing a very well known guitarist specifically for my blog. If it all goes to plan I can announce it in a few hours, but at the moment I'm sitting tight waiting to see if it's gonna happen.
