Incubus - Einziger + Vai??
I was reading the
interview with Mike Einziger of Incubus in GuitarOne
and came across this part:

Anyone else really wish they could hear this
That's one of my dream combinations: Incubus and Steve Vai (doing his wackier Zappa-esque stuff, with Brandon doing vocal unison runs with him like in Nebula).
By the way, anyone got any information on Swollen Pickles?

especially if it's a musician like Vai.

yeah he gave them the instrument they used on "Aqueous Transmission" on "Morning View". It's some sort of weird asian sounding ukulele-type instrument.

Talking about morning view, if you look in the liner notes, the guy that did the woodwind on Aqueous Transmission is called Jon Clarke, which is my name. I thought that was kinda cool.

Nope, that's a saz, Vai's is very banjo-sounding too compared to most I've heard. Mike says (in the interview linked to above) the instrument they used on "Aquious Transmission" is a kokyu from China (the saz Vai has was from Bulgaria I believe). Which makes sense, it sounds a lot like a koto or other instruments from China and that area.

FYI:
"The Saz is the grandfather of the Greek Bouzouki. It originated in Central Asia where Turks lived before their westward migration. Like the guitar in Spain and the bouzouki in Greece, the Saz is the most popular stringed instrument in Turkey. Although similar in shape to the Greek Bouzouki, the construction, size and sound of the Saz is different. You need a baglama saz to be able to play the microtones (Perde) of Arabic music. These instruments have traditional tied frets that are movable, and 3 courses of strings."
A "little saz" is called cilo. Got one, it's a hip thing that has its own ideas of scales and intonation...

Just wanted to add that the Saz in the middle of Incantation was a last minute improvisation thing because even though Incantation was written for Bulgaria, there was a problem with recording there so Steve opted to play and record it in Istanbul (Turkey) and had to insert something in the song to make it more fitting with the region.
