Infected with the 80's and 70's rock/pop!! :)
Recently I have been listening to A LOT of this music. Eddie Money, Journey, Europe, Whitesnake, Boston, Rush, Ratt, Dokken. This stuff is so awesome. I wish I was born further back (born in 85) so I can remember when this stuff was crankin on the radio. And certainly hearing "The Final Countdown" during the presentation of the 2004 NBA Championship doesn't allieviate this thing I have been having lately! Anybody else has a soft spot for this material?

Oh yeah, I've got some major jonesin' for 70's and 80's bands.
I love New Wave and Disco also.
I was born in 1978, so I probably remember it while it was happening more than you. Music like you described is exactly why I say new music out today, on average , doesn't compare.
Proof: There are more classic rock stations in the USA than any other kinds of music (Classic rock stations made up an astounding 53% of all USA registered stations in 2003).
Whereas new pop, new metal stations combined for 28% of the market in 2003.
If new music is so awesome, why is there twice as many classic rock stations???

i love that older rock stuff. perhaps if i were born 10 years before i was (1981), i wouldn't find it so fun? radio overplay tends to kill music that feels fun to me the first time

Yes, that must be true. I know whenever I think to myself, "Gee, I'd like to hear some great music," I turn on the radio.

you also have to remember that classic rock stations are sampling a greater span of time. they play tunes from the 60's on up through the 80's, sometimes early 90's. stations playing current music DO play some great tunes, they just don't have as many tried-and-true songs to choose from.

Many of the great bands of that era still tour and for big bucks in many cases. Face it, the '90s alterna-PUKES were just whining sissies that went out of their way to be anti-rock stars. WHY IN THE HELL WOULD YOU WANT TO BE AN ANTI-ROCK STAR???!!
Thank god I was a teenager in the late '80s at least and got to enjoy some of the glory days of the
electric guitar
before flannel shirt wearing slackers and other dweebs took rock over, followed by every kid in America wanting to be a rapper, I mean wappa.
I saw Journey in Atlanta this year, and make no mistake,
Neal Schon
and the boys have still got it! That kind of talent just doesn't exist in the newer bands, sorry.

Dude, those bands will always have a special place in my heart
Dokken, Ratt (stunk live I'll have you know), Whitesnake (I about wore out the tape with Still of the Night), Poison (first album rocked),
Motley Crue
,
Van Halen
, gimme a break! How can people prefer Nirvana to this stuff?
At work I listen to the radio a lot. I'm endlessly poking the buttons on the radio looking for an 80s hairband. Everything else is just, well, it's all filler. (Yes, I'm pretty narrow-minded when it comes to music.)

I'm not real sure what you mean by this??
I can turn on 3-5 stations at any point that come in perfect that are cranking out songs by Bad Company, Cream, Hendrix and the Eagles through Whitesnake, Scorpions, Cinderella, and Tesla.
This is what I call good music.
And I like the hits.
I hate "underground" music. I hate new unproven bands.
If you are a good enough band, the public will find out about you even without hit....ie: Grateful Dead, Phish.
But if you have been a band 15 years, and 98% of the population has never heard of you....there is a reason.
As far as there being more catalog on Classic Rock stations. Ok fair enough.
Tell me, if you had to listen to the music from only the year 1984 or 2004, which would you choose???
What about 1969 or 1999??
If you chose any of the recent years, then you were probably born after 1985.

here in belgium , there aren't any classic rock radio stations. We have 1 station that plays rock/alternative mostly , and the rest is pop , atleast the rest i can receave here.
I was born in 1989 and enjoy listening to mostly older stuff like black sabbath , motorhead , led zeppelin , metallica etc. These bands are almost never played on radiostations (exept then for stairway to heaven once a year).
I think it's too bad there are so few stations here , and they all broadcast the same genre of music. I think there would definetly be a market for stations that broadcast the older stuff.
so for now , i'll be listening to cd's.
I'm seeing metallica in 2 weeks! i'll post a review after the gig

Why, because you have to be platinum sellers that everyone quote unquote digs to be good?

Bleh, if you've been in a band for 15 years and no one knows who you are, you either completley stink and are in the wrong business, or you are not concerned with making standard 3-4 minute edgy yet radio friendly tunes. In the 1980's that would mean sounding anywhere from RATT to Duran Duran, and in the new millenium, like the neo virgin Britney Spears herself. Both are very pop for their time.
And both are good at what they do.

So you're saying that people will naturally want to listen to what they grew up listening to? Pretty standard and predictable if you ask me.
Ask any one who's hayday was in the 50's if they prefer music from 1984 or 2004 over the top hits from 1954. See if they agree that 80's hairbands were top in their book.
