um... what did he do again at age 21?

he ripped off half of uli jon roth's licks & melodies, throwing in alot of blackmore for good measure. of course recycling any generic baroque melody and adding cheesy lyrics was the final touch.

look, alot of us enjoyed YJM throught the years, and credit him for reviving the neo-classical gig (if that is your thing) but the guy peaked years ago and didn't really do much for the guitar or guitarists in retrospect... glegn

I agree with Glen, but even if the guy has become sort of a caricature of himself, he still puts on a AWESOME show. In this day of non (or crappy!)guitar bands, I love to see a guy playing his a$$ off with 20 Marshall stacks onstage, no matter if he's gained 100 lbs or if he's playing the same licks as 20 years ago.

At least he isnt rapping, goin industrial, or adapting any one of the "producer nudges" so prevelant in "popular music" today, or any other day.

"Uh, Yng-ie baby...solos are out this month. How about we cut that out, and just copy and paste the chorus an extra time? Or perhaps we could have J-lo do a semi-rap thing with Madonna or Ms Spears?"

At least with him, I know what I will get...kudos for that at least, even if it sounds carbon-copied (like so many bands..errr...performing artists...do today). Nikki

I gotta agree with caprile. While every other "band" out there has lights flashing and samples flying out everywhere, Yngwie puts on one hell of a show with a guitar and a bunch of really loud amps

Omg, you still don't see my point, I was talking about Yngwie as a musician and a composer, not how influential he has been, although I think he has. I don't care if he stole all his licks from my grandfather, there is still noone able to handle a guitar like he does. And I never ever heard about ANYONE composing a formally correct fugue, just out of talent and without classical training.
And btw, tell me wich guitar players you are listening to who aren't based upon classical music, besides their blues playing?

For the record: "Yngwie Malmsteen's playing filled a particular niche in the instrumental rock guitar genre as few could. His fingers can move across harmonic minor arpeggios at speeds that would melt the hands of mere mortals. His shows are eye-popping incredible. He is the man, the myth, the legend....Yngwie Malmsteen."

Now, with that said, I again ask on this forum, "Is it just me, or does Yngwie look like Elvis in that picture on Vai.com?"

Let me rephrase this so that I don't sound like I'm bashing him. "Is it just me, or does Yngwie, the incredible guitarist whose licks are played at lightning speed and who helped define instrumental rock guitar, look like Elvis in that picture on Vai.com?"

His Elvisocity (or would it be Elvisness?) has nothing to do with him as a guitarist.

It isn't possible to compose a "formally correct fugue" without training; the definition of fugue would have to be part of that training, see? Yng has technique to spare, he could have been two guitarists even, but it's the same old thing. And he's a primadonna, which surprisingly turns people off. So, I'd see him as part of a triple bill, but I wouldn't go out of my way to see him by himself. I like the show, but not the showman in this instance.
As for your apparent age hangup thing, Marty Friedman was 17 and Jason Becker 15 when "Speed Metal Symphony" came out, if you're keeping score. I think Joe Pass was in his 50's when Virtuoso No. 4 came out, too. Now there's a guitar album!

This discussion is about as pointless as any "my dad can beat up your dad" discussion.
Er, my dad can beat up your dad.

So? This is supposed to prove something?

The bottom line is this: this is a forum where people share their opinions. That's what we're doing. We all have differing view points. (Thank God!) I don't think anyone intended to offend.

Some of us like ying-yang, some of us don't like yingying. With a name like Yngwie, you just have to have some fun with it. Personally, I don't know much about him (just his name and song or two). But I'll let you know after November 12th...

I don't know about Elvis, but he does look like he just walked out of the 80s.

This discussion was dumb from the get-go.

If someone is bold enough to say that NO ONE ELSE could ever do what yngwie does, that's fine, good on you.

I still say that there are several SERIOUS musicians around this forum that could take on the absolute BEST this world has to offer, and potentially win. Guys like ricky garcia are a prime example.

Not to take away from the Yngster, saying that type of stuff about anyone at all is called over-generalizing, in its purest sense. I personally think that Yngster is made fun of way too much, and that he could quite possibly be one of the best that has ever live...EVER. but let's not pretend that there has never been a soul that has mastered the instrument as he has. That's all I'm saying

I'm better than Yngwie in the sense that when I play, chicks get up and dance. And if you've heard the first Mourning Widows CD, you know that that's what it's all about

Amen! I get crap from friends all the time about being in a non-guitarcentric band. But...I'll take hot chicks dancing to our music over a bunch of guys standing there with their arms crossed ANY day Sausagefests are lame! (But I bought my G3 tix anyway!)
