Re: Is there anyone tired of all these virtuosity shows?

I respect and I like to see players that have reached high levels of virtuosity.
But the point is,I can't listen them too long if they haven't used it wisely to make a good song or they do not have intricate musical moments.
So my point would be,technique in service of the song, not vice-versa.
Today we get many of these frustrated people battling each other all the time 'bout that "feeling vs technique" type of stuff.
I guess you all seen it many times...
Well,I think that's a bullsh*t.What's the refference of "emotion"?
Three tones or fast arpeggio lick?
Get a life man!!!

Anything will do,as you're playing real music!

Yes but it is not the only way to master your instrument... I dunno that's how I feel. the virtuosity is in the rests as much as when you play the notes.

And I'm not the whining one in case you have not noticed, you two are the ones who do that. If this topic holds nothing for you there are a myriad of topics around the forum.

Re: Is there anyone tired of all these virtuosity shows?

i think Wis you should use the word WONKERY instead of VIRTUOSITY. otherwise the topic will get ruined as people rush in to defend their guitar god

most of us are tired of it... virtuosity for virtuosity sake alone is pointless and tiresome.

i just watched the first few songs of Satriani Live (in full HDTV) and before the intro was over i said to myself joe is ****ing not really playing with emotion as he has years ago. couldn't even bend a note with emotion... just the way these guys tend to drift i guess. not gonna lose sleep over it... glen

Re: Is there anyone tired of all these virtuosity shows?

I gave up on Joe when I watched G3 Denver and perhaps slightly before that when he released Is There Love In Space. Surfing and Blue Dream remain to be in my list of all time favorites but I didn't even wonder what he played on Satriani Live DVD when I saw it in my CD store...

I have the live Satch album, it's the first thing I've thought was OK since Flying in a Blue Dream. It's not a bad album really, and I like the version of Ice 9 on there quite a bit. Like you, though, I also prefer Surfing and Blue Dream the best.

Re: Is there anyone tired of all these virtuosity shows?

Former Berklee student here. Virtuosity is a much overused term. For me knowledge of the instrument and music theory are more important than speed. I f someone possesses all of the above...well how lucky are we to enjoy and love thier music. I pray i never reach a point in my musical life that pure talent does not inspire me.....no matter how many times i hear it. If that does happen i guess you will find me at a Killers or Nickelback concert.

Re: Is there anyone tired of all these virtuosity shows?

I myself got to this point also a few times. I got "tired" of Yngwie, Satch and Steve at one point but then I discovered Jason Becker, George Bellas etc. and all was fine. A few years ago it happened again but at time I discovered Allan Holdsworth, Shawn Lane, Greg Howe, Stanley Jordan, TJ. Helmerich, Brett Garsed, Eric Johnson and all was fine once more and it still is .

Regards

André

I'm currently addicted to Brett Garsed more than ever before. His album Big Sky is amazing. I love how he still makes beautiful music but can shred for days. He uses his skills in the right way, for sure. His phrasing is superb. God bless Brett Garsed!

Oh, and he sounds f*king awesome on the new Planet X material! That's not available yet, but I'm very lucky to have heard most of the new album long ago, being as I work for Derek Sherinian and PX. Check that album out if you can, it'll be called Quantum, also featuring Holdsworth on 2 tracks.

I still listen to John Petrucci a lot. His music always sounds fresh and good to me. Same thing with Vinnie Moore; the guy's music is just awesome. Don't really know why though, I get tired of Satch and Vai so quickly (except for Satch's EoC).

Forgot about Planet X too. I love them, and listen to them a lot.

If you keep listening to Uber fast players you are going to get bored sooner or later...

If you listen to all kinds of music, most probably you wont...

There are far better guitar players around.
+1 Check out some more players, those exact four to mention.
