Is there anyone tired of all these virtuosity shows?

Yeah the title sums it all. I'm not just meaning Yngwie (whom I have always disliked) but also Steve, Satch, Gilbert, Petrucci and others that I can't think of right now.

I find that I'm not that eager to listen all of those lightning fast solos and fancy techniques. Don't get me wrong this is not about the classic "this stuff lacks emotion" argument. They may be very touching (Lotus Feet, FTLOG) but they're not fun anymore...

I hope I can make myself clear, though I doubt it very much. Is it just me or are there other people who feel this way?

Some people like jazz, some like country, some like blues, or folk, or classical. Some like rock, some like instrumental. Some people like some stuff for a while and migrate on to other stuff, or listen to different stuff as the mood takes them.

No offence, but starting a thread asking if people like a particular genre is about as stupid as threads get. Listen to whatever you want and dont be looking over your shoulder to see what the other guy is listening to.

What's your problem man? I was just telling that I used to love these stuff and now they are not so nice and was wondering if anyone went through this at all. I don't care what the hell people listen to, they can listen Britney Spears and I wouldn't give a damn. I'm not asking if anyone likes jazz or not. Or blues, or classical... It was just an observation I made and wondered if that happened to other people. I listen to classical and jazz and am happy with my music selection, why would I even care what you listen to?

Do read again and again until what I'm wondering sinks in and then answer or not. I'm tired of all these misunderstandings and lashing-outs that happen so much lately.

I understand. I'm not tired of guitar virtuoso's, but sure I got sick of FTLOG about 15 years ago. Maybe you need new inspiration? Check out some other artists such as Brett Garsed, Shawn Lane, Allan Holdsworth, Guthrie Govan, to name just a few. I apologize to the Vai and Yngwie fans, but their stuff gets tired easily. There are far better guitar players around.

My problem is that ive been around internet forums long enough to know that these kind of threads go nowhere fast..

You said, and I quote verbatim, 'why would I even care what you listen to?'

If you dont see the irony there, I give up...

I went thru it.. And then I found Andy Timmons and all was correct with the Universe once again..

Yeah I go back to them classic shredder/instrumentalists. But I dig the Jazz guitar of Grant Green so much I just cant get enough.. His phrasing is just I dont know you got to listen to him.

But yeah I get bored with it every once in a while but I always come back to it.

I agree with Dee for sure..... everyone gets tired of listening to or playing the same thing time after time at some point. While some may interpret your thread as "going nowhere" or "stupid", it shows a lack of being open to what others are thinking or may be dealing with.

Posting your thoughts is a good thing..... besides, there's a ton of music I wouldn't have "discovered" without "looking over my shoulder" to see what others are listening to or playing.

I never read into your post as asking whether anyone "liked a particular genre".... just that you had grown tired of listening to certain players or songs. Like Dee stated..... you're probibaly looking for something new to inspire you. Usually an indicator that it's time for new musical growth and a possible change in direction.

Personally, I have been through the same situation many times and have always seen it as a challenge to open both my ears and mind to something untried. But I always seem to come to a point where I go back to the music that influenced me early on. Whether that's going back and listening to material from the 50's or 60's or delving into different player styles.

Hang in there, listen to other genre's and players (not just guitarist's) and see where it takes you.

As far as the "hostility" many of us display from time to time..... oh well, you've got to remember we're all living in uncertain times and we each handle that stress differently. Walling off and showing a defensive posture is a pretty common method of dealing when others don't understand or agree with your position.

Peace, love, & rock-n-roll!

Re: Is there anyone tired of all these virtuosity shows?

I'll definitely check some new stuff, that is new for me but old for some of you guys.

I've come to realize another thing. Virtuosity is being associated with speed generally. That is true for me as well, so I'm not blaming anyone. One of the reasons that I loved Satch or Steve was that they could play hard parts extremely fast but with apparent ease. Though this points to extreme control over the instrument which then points to virtuosity, there has to be some other players who are virtuosoes in other ways.

For example, Miles Davis who I'm just discovering. He was such an awesome player. Bill Evans has become one of my alltime favorites on piano. His Waltz for Debby album is great. SRV was another virtuoso though he could be a bit repetitive sometimes.

Why is being a virtuoso is equated with being damn fast? Or is it just me who makes this observation?

Virtuosity is technical mastery of your instrument. To play fluidly and accurately at high speeds demands technical mastery.

You might like Freddie Hubbard, too. I'm not keen on Miles, he was always a little screechy for my ears, but check out Hubbard if you get the chance, he sounds very smooth. I have 3 albums; First Light, Red Clay and Straight Life. They're all very good.

Re: Is there anyone tired of all these virtuosity shows?

Admittedly, I've been tired of virtuoso guitarists for a while too. I'd rather listen to a classical guitarist most of the time now than Vai, Satch, etc. My favorite Satch album (and the only one I listen to regulary) is Engines of Creation, because 1) It's a great, well written album, and 2) It's not the same old rock stuff he's always done.

It happens. Move on, find something else. Some people like jazz and blues. Some people like folk and country. I like classical, electronica, good female pop, and death metal.
