Is there one band you just have a hard time with?
Is there one band that you have a hard time learning or getting it perfected.
I know this sounds bad but for the life of me Old School Megadeth is just a pain in my arse to learn. Its not like its hard to remember or that its hard to learn.
Its just hard to get up to speed and fluently. I can learn almost a albums worth of other music before I get two megadeth songs under my fingers.
There like my Arc Enemy of learning.. LOL
I get it eventually but it just seems to take much longer than other bands.

Planet X is hard to learn. Often you need a 7-string too, but I ain't got one.
Seriously, if you think Megadeth is hard, try working out Moonbabies by Planet X. I swear Megadeth will seem easy in comparison.

Re: Is there one band you just have a hard time with?
Believe me, even Megadeth
guitar players
have a hard time nailing their own songs! Al Pitrelli even went out of his way to ask
Marty Friedman
to teach him how certain leads go & if you watched some Megadeth shows featuring Al, you could see that he was trying to copy Marty's solos note-for-note but came out a little short; you can almost say that when he's at the point where he can't replicate certain solo sections, he finally resorts to some good 'ol improv.
It's a little different with prog/fusion bands like Planet X; it's more improvisation than nostalgia. I mean nobody went into fits when TJ Helmerich played his own brand of lead guitar over PX songs, as long as the backbone, the rhythm, was there. You can put 5 different guitar players & they'll play different solos for the same Planet X song.
But if you're Glen Drover and you don't play Hangar 18 solos like Marty did, you're in deep trouble!

Megadeth is quite hard, Friedman is deceptively difficult to copy, harder still to try to improvise as he would.
But......
Thre are some seriously harder bands/artists to imitate. Like Cacophony, because you have to copy both Friedman AND Becker, or
Allan Holdsworth
, who must get some sick please out of knowing that anybody who trys to copy him ends up with mangled hands.

A few years ago, I had a hard time perfecting
Eric Johnson
's technique and his songs, now I pretty much can learn anything if I set my mind to do it.
I want to get my hands on some
Tony MacAlpine
tab. Preferably Premonition, Evolution, Violent Machine and Chromaticity.

+1 Holdsworths stretches can seem downright scary. The key thing to learning old thrash rythms is to learn your downpicking. As far as the leads they arent always that linear as alot of the trash guys were a bit unschooled so they can kind of throw you for a loop even though their not essentially any faster than the shred we play on a day to day basis
