Just got back from a concert with Frank Gambale
I just got back from a concert with
Frank Gambale
.
I must say heīs really impressive. I didnīt know much about his music before though Iīd heard of him.
Itīs inspiring to see musicians of that calibre.
The drummer (Joel Taylor) and the bass player (Ric Fierabracci) were totally jaw-dropping.
Though the genre is perhaps not my favorite to be frank, it is a privilege
to see such great musicians perform. And he was in a good mood too!
What do you guys think about him?
Now, I canīt wait to see Vai perform live.
Now that will be a treat all the way.

You just got back from a gig with him? Meaning you PLAYED with him? Or do you mean that you just saw him perform?

Lol, it sounds like you played
with
him...well, maybe you did...
I saw Frank with Chick Corea band in Athens this summer, and it was a great show. I was never a big fan of his tone, but his playing is superb...ironically the FG highlight of the evenig was his acoustic solo...

Frank is awesome. I always think he shines best when he just lets it rip because he does it so tastefully. I don't like some of his solo albums where it's more rock oriented and he's obviously restraining himself. But once he starts ripping it up in a jazz fusion context...oh man.
I'd recommend his Live album...his playing is in top form there.....also Centrifugal Funk...he stole that disc
I don't like his tone in recent days but I certianly liked his tone way back when.

He's supposed to be coming to Indianapolis too. I love his stuff with the GHS Trio and Vital Information. I don't like his solo CDs (too smooth jazz for my tastes), but he's an awesome player.

I think he's great. His tone is quite alright to my ear, so much the fact that I even picked up one of his new Yamaha signature models. That is one sweet guitar!
I met him after a show in the late 90's and we spoke about Steely Dan and
Larry Carlton
, but I can't remember much more. I only remember for sure that he was great.
His new DVD, "Concert With Class," is really worth picking up, since it's full of guitar-heavy tasteful playing.

Carlo, that guitar is really worth getting. If you can, don't hesitate to spend the money. A friend of mine wants one too but is looking for a second hand one to save some cash -- but he can't find one at all...

The stuff Gambale has done with Steve Smith and
Stu Hamm
is particularly good-not every track does IT for me, but there are real gems.
Dodgy hairstyle though. Started playing drums last year. Gambale is featured heavily on Steve Smith's drum DVD.

babahi- the guitar looks really smooth and classy...but the price is a lil scary and I doubt if there's a lot of second hands around here. I've been debating between that or a Tom Anderson.....or the new AT sig. damn u GAS...lol
hey Guy...thanks for the info....I'm gonna get that Steve Smith DVD asap

Can anyone tell me what the relatively new Gambale tuition DVD is called-I think it has a separate disc with live stuff on it??
Is it worth getting?
Thanks, Guy.

Guy, that's the "Concert With Class" DVD. It's not really a guitar lesson at the end, but rather a lesson on how to play the songs in the video. You get a small tab booklet with the DVD and Frank basically demonstrates the stuff in it. The solos are not transcribed, nor demonstrated in the "lesson" part. So the only thing you can learn are the songs themselves. But the performance is fantastic, the songs sound much better and much more alive than their original album versions. I actually ripped the audio off the cd and put it on my iPod.
