Just got into a band for the first time, need some help.

Ok so I was the guitar tech for this local band that my best friend is in and i've been seeing them play shows for maybe 3 years. Lately their second guitarist has been missing practice or coming and playing 2 songs and then packing everything in. So the band said they are going to talk to him to figure out whether he's in or out. If he is out I'm in, and I'm having problems with some of the riffs in some of the songs already written. Not that they are really hard, its just i've never had to learn a riff by looking at someone else play it, its either been I can hear it by ear or if it's too hard I'll just find a tab or I'll slowly tab it over time. Any suggestions on what i should do? Should I hang out with the other guitarist (my best friend) and tab out some of the riffs I just can't seem to get and play them to death at home?

If you can't pick it up from just watching it, then definitely tab it out and then practice.

Yeah thats what I was thinking of doing, I just wanted to know if it would be out of the ordinary to practice your owns bands songs from tab. Of course once I memorize it I'll be fine, but the other guitarist I'm replacing would always follow the other guitarist instead of like sometimes playing in harmonies. I think I might tab out the other guitarists riffs and change what I play to complement his stuff, instead of just following all the time.
