Just watched "Crossroads"... (1986)

Lo all,

Just watched "Crossroads" for the first time... I can remember the trailer for it appearing on an old "Karate Kid" VHS I used to watch all the time when I was a little kid - I was desperate to watch it back then. Anyway, I digress...

What did anybody think of it? To be honest I expected it to be pretty dire but I actually quite enjoyed it. Not much guitar playing in it really. Though surprisingly Ralf (Karate Kid) did a pretty good job at miming the close-up bits (in the sense that it's obvious he's miming but at least he's trying). I realise now that I probably didn't get to see it when I was little due the bit of swearing and shagging etc...

Anyway, I was a bit disappointed that Vai wasn't in it more. To be honest I was half watching it just to see a young Steve play a pointy Jackson. A bit annoyed that the only bit you see him in is the bit that was doing the fileshare rounds a while back.

Anyway, overall I liked it and would recommend it if you don't mind switching your mind off a bit and absorbing some 80’s nostalgia.

Interested to hear peoples views on this btw…

-Bob

I love that movie! I find myself waiting just to see vai, but it is an alright movie,(the parts without vai:-)) Ralf did do a decent job. It was just a trip to see Vai in a movie like that. he kicked ass. I liked how he was miming his own stuff! That was pretty funny! Great movie.

Vai plays great in this era, really cool chops.
I love the bit near the end of the duel when Vai raises his arm in victory, and then Macchio plays the cheesiest lick you`ve ever heard. (just before `Eugenes Trick Bag`, i think that`s what it`s called. Vai looks around as if he`s worried...... and then the battle continues.

Steve has a killer tone in that movie, but so does Ry Cooder. It's a good movie all in all and the duel floors me every time.

steve does have a killer tone in that movie and i wish i knew what he was using to get it! i also love that guitar. that movie was one of the main things that fueled my playing when i was younger. back then i had no idea you could do those things on an electric guitar. vai fan every since. that vai style from that era was my favorite. it was more raw and in your face! i wish there was a cuttin' heads place like that around here. maybe i'll open one...i'm sure chicago would love that.

Yeah, that would be a pretty cool concept. Just have like an open stage for musicians and have them duel it out to see who has the best chops.

Alas, I've never actually seen the movie myself...I've just seen the guitar battle like a bajillion times. I'm not even sure where to find it. Everytime I try and do a search for Crossroads that damn Britney Spears movie pops up...and then I have to go out and kill something to purge it from my mind.

Speaking of Vai and movies, I've just remembered an old interview in which he said he wanted to star in 'interview with the vampire' right after reading the book. This is way before there was even a plan to make the movie.

Anyway, he said that he had been born to play that role, that he was writing a soundtrack for it and that he had contacted Ann Rice about making a movie. That would have been cool- better Vai than Tom Cruise!

Did anyone read that too?

Yes I remember that too. I think it's written somewhere in the liner notes of "Love Blood". Steve tried to buy the rights to the book but when Geffen and other big timers came will their offers....

I love the movie "Crossroads" ! My guitar teacher is teaching me "Eugene's Trick Bag " right now, here is a soundclip from vai.com http://www.vai.com/SightsSounds/aura...ion/index.html

My guitar teacher wants me to ask Vai, when I see him backsatge next friday, how he hit the high a at the end of the crossroads piece. He wants to know if he used a Harmonizer in the studio or if he bent his high e on a tele neck pickup.

Re: Just watched "Crossroads"... (1986)

I dunno if it really played it on the telecaster because there's a good amount of 24 fret action in that piece. I think he just played it on his normal guitar and moved his toggle switch to a position that gave him a more "tele" type sound. Also, the way that he hit that last note at the end of the song was to pick over the pickup.

I heard he fretted it on the neck pickup giving a perfect A.

Re: Just watched "Crossroads"... (1986)

could be any number of things... I think it was probably fretting the pickup for the A and then just doing some studio magic with shoving that little orchastra on that last note too.

You can hear the harmoniser on the last note - Eventide H3000 speaks loud and clear
Steve recorded Eugene's Trick bag on the green meanie (22 fret guitar) in A and it was sped up to B for the movie for some reason........

I thought it was speeded up by what amounted to a half tone? and is this something to do with the difference between how VCRs play at slightly faster speeds than movie theater projectors? Or have I finally lost the plot?
