Re: Kirk Hammett good guitarist or hiding behind the wah

voted for kirk is fantastic.. why? because i'll admit i really enjoy his playing through years ( debut-mid 1990s ) havent heard of them these days, i heard they got really bad.. so its okay.. it happens.. i guess its the time for them to change style or w/e hehe..

im sure he've got something more to give to us but the band is holdin him.. =\

he should be more like paul gilbert.. ( expect the unexpected ) because he is pretty much predictable now..

hehe

Re: Kirk Hammett good guitarist or hiding behind the wah

This is difficult. But on balance I went negative.

Firstly because I don't think he has progressed. Secondly he he is extremely sloppy live. Thirdly, because he uses the wah too much.

He has a good pedigree. "...and Justice For All" proves he can play in the studio. He uses reverse headstock guitars, and good gear in general. I think that he is very much of his time though.

I listened to the "Unforgiven" solo recently. When I first heard it I was blown away, it was a cool solo. The more I listen to it now (15 years later, I feel old) the more I question the note choice, and the more I hear bum notes. Some of his bends are worthy of Slash (great player, but the November Rain solo is painful at points). People say that Vai (and others) have no soul, but when many players are playing with "feel" it just seems that they think they have a licence to go out of tune, and we don't complain. When was the last time someone actually said to a famous player, "Yep, great music but your solo had some bum notes"? I think that Hammett, like many players in the '90s, started trying to play like Jimi and failed. The sad thing is that there will only ever be one, and no one else will ever be able to emulate that.

It is ironic that the most influential metal band for the last twenty years is has been Metallica (just listen to every thrash/death/nu-metal/whatever tune. Metallica did that first. Don't you remember when thrash included Anthrax?) and the thing that everyone has been influenced by is the rythm guitar playing.

I'll probably never play as well as Hammett, but then I wont ever be in a high profile band, unless my 80's glam covers band Whiskerless Kitten suddenly reforms

Re: Kirk Hammett good guitarist or hiding behind the wah

at least he is better than Kerry King...eh, yuck.

While he may not be the best soloist, many of then are very musical and not aboot pure speed. So therefore I will vote he is a good guitarist.

Right well, I think he's absolutely crap. He's boring, repetitive and predicatable, and technically unimpressive. James is better than Kirk, Dave is better than James, Marty is better than Dave. And then it ends, because I can't think of any metal players better than Friedman.

Re: Kirk Hammett good guitarist or hiding behind the wah

I havent heard a Kirk solo since "and justice for all"
I didnt buy the black album cos it was sh1t and metallica started to sell out in a big way.
im quite happy listening to great metallica classics up to (and excluding) that crappy black album...
and Kirk was OK then...

That was hard to watch. It went from a couple bad notes to "crap, I just give up" in less the 10 seconds.

Noel is no shredder but he is an excellent songwriter and plays within the context of Oasis excellently.
