This question is inherently flawed as you made the fatal assumtion that Kirk was once a good guitarist.

Re: Kirk Hammett good guitarist or hiding behind the wah

ok, ok. The guys playing sucks, he uses too much wah blah blah blah. But he has had an enourmous influence on so many lead guitarists that i know.

BUT, how many people here, (I'm talking to the 30'ish crowd here)used to pick up their crappy first guitar, crank up 'puppets' and pretend they WERE hammet? I may be alone in this, or maybe even a little strange, but me and my mates so wanted to be metallica when we were just starting out in our band (back in the late '80's) that we would all just mosh along to puppets or '...and justice' wishing we could one day be that good. Then we discovered Pantera, Metallica released the black album and that honeymoon period was over.

Now i know the question was about his talent, and i will say that i don't think he is nearly as bad as everyone seems to be saying. And he is a **** load better than mustaine. At least he did on occassion attempt to escape from the pentatonic box at the 12th fret.

my 2 cents.
So they are basically the same live as they've always been I've seen them back in the hayday - Justice Concert. Slop! Then with Guns and Roses in a stadium. SLOP to the MAX! G&R blew them away, but that's prolly coz axl was busy doing heroine back stage so it was basically all Instumental Then I saw the Black concert - sloppier yet! I could never bring myself to see them live again But I do have to say even after all these negative coments that they and Kirk were a pretty big inspiration to me in the day. Maiden was far and away much more to me though.

I'm also guilty of this but in my defence back in the mid/late 80's I couldn't play (not much has changed) and I didn't know how little Kirk is involved in Metallica's music.

Now that I can play a little better (but more importantly have paid attention to people like Marty Friedman, Dimebag, Glen Tipton, Dave Murray, Dan Spitz, Alez Skolnick and people like Paul Gilbert, Steve, Joe and even the mighty Ed himself) and know for a fact that Kirk's involvement in the first 5 albums was minimal I know better than to keep glorifying him.

Don't get me wrong, had you asked me about James I'd say that he is a genius. James Hetfield is the most important guitarist/composer we've had in the past 20 years and he brough on a movement of angry metal that's being copied to this very day.
James is THE DADDY of metal and he would have gone as far as he did with any other 3 members in Metallica.

Just for the record Dave Mustaine is 10 times better than Kirk and 50 times better if you consider composition skills.

With all that being said, I think that Kirk is an OK guitarist and considering he's been playing guitar for a living for close to 24 years now he ought to be quite good.
What I'm saying is - he's not as good as:
a) Most people claim he is
b) As he should be after being in Metallica for 24 years.

ilia

p.s. I really urge you to watch a little documentary called "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica" and you'll clearly see what I'm talking about...

Re: Kirk Hammett good guitarist or hiding behind the wah

Alex skolnick rocks, i was a huge fan of Testament back in the '80's.
I also picked up Marty Friedmans new album, last night, the SMAP cover had me giggling, i sing that song at Karaoke. So far so good.

I can comprehensively state that they both kick Hammet AND Mustaines asses, but i still like 'em both at times.
