Kirk Hammett good guitarist or hiding behind the wah

I was watching the Rock AM Ring DVD(Legal) I downloaded from www.tradersden.org and noticed alot of Kirk's playing was very very sloppy especially the fade to black intro solo.

Anyway has kirk went downhill and is now hiding behind his wah or is he still a good guitarist.

I think hes hiding behind the wah almost every fricking solo he is just cranking on that thing.. Its ok to use it but hes almost dependent on it.

my 2 cents..

I don't have anything at all good to say about Kirk's playing so let's just leave it at that.

Probably bored with playing the cr*p they turn out these days, but too comfortable and enjoying the money to seek out change.

Anyone heard their 'RARE' version of Little Wing? Kirk Absolutley RUINS in, I'll give it to him he has in the past written some pretty good solos but overall his technique sucks, awful intonation and crappy vibrato .. now slay me

Thumbs down

Re: Kirk Hammett good guitarist or hiding behind the wah

Errrrrrr. I can't even stand listening to him anymore If ya ask me he never was that good in the first place. Mr. one string walkdown James is the one who wrote all the cool (older) stuff and is far better. James is also a pretty damn good lead guitarist, but being the front man it's kind of hard to cover everything

Re: Kirk Hammett good guitarist or hiding behind the wah

I liked Kirk Hammett alot when growing up. Especially back when Justice came out.

I voted Kirk's fantastic based on Ride The Lightning, Master Of Puppets and of course And Justice For All.

I do like some of his guitar solos on the black album, Wherever I May Roam in particular.

I think you guys are bad mouthing kirk a little too much cause of wah. Sure he uses alot of wah. so does zakk!, but theres not discussion about zakk using too much wah. I think hammett it a very good guitar player and took metallica to where they are. everything from past to present. plus he doesnt sound to bad when he does bluesy licks. I for one voted him fantastic.

Re: Kirk Hammett good guitarist or hiding behind the wah

For everything up until the black album he was a true guitar hero/god. Satch still has very good things to say about him and his playing.
For all the people who do bad mouth him few can actually play precisely like him, although their are some easier solos.
James hetfield isnt a pimple on Kirk Hammett's ass anymore and hasnt been since he burnt his arm up end of discussion.

Re: Kirk Hammett good guitarist or hiding behind the wah

I don't particularly care for the guy, he's had one or two good solos but everything else is just mediocre.

I think he's the perfect 5 out of 10 guy like Vai/Satch/Gilbert are a 10 and the guy from Good Charlotte/Charlie from Busted/Noel Gallagher are a 0 he is right in between at 5.

Are you kidding???

James is Metallica - the rest might as well be studio musicians.
Every riff you hear on ALL songs up to the Black album - that's James - it's his lyrics, his riffs, his ideas, his songs.
All the good stuff is James on his own.

Kirk was only asked to go into the studio after everything else was recorded and he was allocated 10-15sec gaps to come up with solos and if you can be bothered to watch "A Year and a Half in the Life of Metallica" (both parts) you can see how Kirk approaches these solo slots.... which is why he struggles to play any of these "solos" live.
I for one fell very sorry for the SF Symphony (Metallica S&M) which is one of the best orchestras in the US (and the wolrd) and getting in is so competative that even the percussion player can probably play all of Kirk's solos on xylophones spot on from one listen, never mind the violinists yet all 100 piece orchestra were made to play behind the worst musician in the building and Kirk was sloppy as hell.
He's a decent guitarist with some decent speed but with the worst note choice known to man and the only reason we know his name is luck.
He was lucky enough to end up in James's band.

Anyway, if you think Kirk had anything to do with the success of Metallica then you are clearly very, very confused.

Re: Kirk Hammett good guitarist or hiding behind the wah

Without a question I'd put Mustaine over Hammett any day of the week.

Try playing the main riff to Train of Consequence and you'll see what I mean
