Haha they're not the enemy. They toured with em, they're buddies. Although people do the stupid SX versus DT thing all the time. To me, SX is better now but they're even overall. SX have divine wings and odyssey and paradise lost as incredible albums, DT have images, scenes, six degrees...its just that recently (post 2002) DT havent put out anything I really liked but SX put out 2 amazing albums so currently my vote on this debate goes to them, but i love both bands equally. SFAM is probably my favorite album of all time. And youre welcome (although i didnt tape it thanks to the guy that did, cuz its great!).

Is it just me or does the audio quality of your video sound amazing for a situation like that? And DiMarzio should also thank you as you just sold me a D-Sonic. Thanks for the videos.

Lol. I basically searched for LTE in recent videos and found the ones that this dude put up. But yeah the quality is pretty damn great, I hope this will become an official DVD (not from this dude taping it but from the pro taping that happened), cuz this show was absolutely incredible.

Hahahaha, yep. John's gone back to the long-haired pre-Ernie Ball days, no more combat pants and mohawks. I didnt get a chance to but I really wanted to ask him for a picture of his arm next to my head, just for size purposes. He is a goddamn BEAR dude. I dont remember where I saw the pic and i cant find it now but there was some drawing of him "evolving", in the first panel he's skinny and with super long hair like he was in the Images and Words days, and basically it ends with him becoming an actual bear lmao. Priceless.

Re: Liquid Tension Experiment- 10th anniversary show - INCREDIBLE

Ok, so, Chicago show...

WOAH!
We got there 5 hours early and got front row center. I touched Petrucci's guitar. Etc. He shredded right in my face, and I'm pretty sure he remember me and my friend from G3 because he kept pointing at us, giving us the horns, eye contact. Or maybe it's because we were air-guitaring every note
But the best part was halfway through the set, Rudess's keys crapped out! So they started jamming. Just improvizing, like they did at Berklee so many years ago. Me and my friend held up the number "7" with our fingers and Portnoy raised his eyebrows and changed into 7/8 from 4, and then gave us the horns. That was pretty sweet.
So after talking on the phone for the entire time (to Roland in Japan, figuring out what's wrong) Rudess comes out and takes JP's guitar and starts shredding in our face. JP jumped on Levin's bass, and Levin just played the Chapman stick. It's pretty funny to see a bear like Petrucci playing a pink bass.
Then out comes the drummer from Anthrax. He jumped on the drums and Portnoy got the bass from John. Then after sitting there for a while, John got his guitar back. So this was just one big amazing jam that's never going to happen again. They jammed on everything...Zeppelin tunes, and even the alien melody from "Close Encounters of the 3rd Kind!!"
So then Rudess informs us that he can't fix his keys, so they can't continue their songs, but this was after an hour and a half of pure musical sex, so we were ok with it. We saw a historical show. Most amazing thing of my life. And just think, on Sunday, I saw Return to Forever. Amazing.

By the way, I just checked youtube, and the videos are up. Just search "Liquid Tension Experiment Chicago" and you'll find em all. I'm the guy who's yelling "YEAH JOHN!!!" every 15 seconds I couldn't help it! And during the "State of Grace" video, I'm the guy who's groaning over his absolutely beautiful tone. It sounds like I'm having sex, but hey, that's what tone like that does to a man.

I was front center. It's still sublime.

I hate the guys that yell at the band during the show. It's like...we came to listen to the guys play and then theres these ppl every ten seconds going "YEAH JOHN WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO YEAH JORDAN YEAH MIKE YEAHH WOOOOOOOO" and in the meantime while you're trying to drone them out you're missing all the cool stuff going on up on the stage...if I wanted to pay for a bunch of people screaming out random stuff there are plenty of bands I couldve gone to see. I dont really see why the whooping and hollering and praise cant be saved for in between songs when ppl are applauding and going crazy anyway. Thankfully that kinda behavior was limited at my show in NYC.

And a few of my buds were at the Chicago show and were sorely disappointed by the fact that Jordan's keys crapped out and left them with random jams. I think Jordan is probably one of the best keyboard players around, he is absolutely an incredible musician, but what kind of professional musician gigs around without a backup? Semi-direct quote from my buds who went: the anthrax guest appearance was cool and so was them switching instruments, definitely a unique experience but we didnt pay for Liquid Trio Experiment live. There's a reason that record did poorly. I would agree with that, obviously some jamming is cool but my friends who saw it said it was very messy and repetitive. And to me, the jamming we got in NYC was my least favorite/memorable part of an incredible concert. It can be fun but people like Petrucci and Rudess are best playing the songs they wrote. Solos like the one in fatal tragedy, spirit carries on, hollow years at Budokan, etc...they're amazingly written and performed, but when I see Petrucci just jam he very rarely breaks out cool jazz stuff or something with very unique phrasing, usually its just blazing alternate picking, which is cool technique-wise but not very musical and to my personal taste not very pleasant to hear. To my ears the point of super fast parts in songs and solos is to build momentum, but when the song IS a super fast solo...it just loses the touch. That's why I love stuff like universal mind, paradigm shift, biaxident, when the water breaks...because theyre not speed start to finish but tastefully incorporate slower parts and very defined melodies.

Anyway just adding to the story from someone else's perspective lol. I wasnt there, and all that matters at concerts is having fun and it sounds like you had a freakin' blast just like I did .

Yes indeedy. I feel the need to shout because when I perform, I can't stand when people are just sitting there.
But the jam was cool. I mean, I have the albums, so I'm glad I saw something that I haven't heard them do.

Re: Liquid Tension Experiment- 10th anniversary show - INCREDIBLE

anyone hear about the show this week where the keyboard stopped working so they jammed for an hour and a half, with various combinations of line up including:
levin-chapman stick
petrucci-bass
portnoy-drums
rudess-guitar

portnoy-drums
rudess-guitar
levin-bass

portnoy-bass
rudess-guitar
Charlie Benante (Anthrax)-drums

portnoy is going to get the soundboard recordings released on ytsejam records i think.

Im hoping Portnoy releases OUR show in New York City and not random jams in Chicago due to keyboard failure lol. I'm sure he's learned after seeing how poorly Liquid Trio Experiment did that the majority of their fans dont want 2 hours of random off the wall jamming. People were pro-taping the NYC show so I think/hope that's the one that's gonna make it on the DVD.

Re: Liquid Tension Experiment- 10th anniversary show - INCREDIBLE

They've pro-filmed each of the shows so far. Either they'll take the best show or just compile the best performances of each indivudual song...or include more than one night. No way of knowing just yet. I'm sure beyond show footage there'll be all kinds of bonus footage, knowing portnoy, so I doubt anyone will have much reason to feel shorthanded. In addition to the live cd/dvd, portnoy also confirmed (possibly half-jokingly) that the jam from chicago would be released in one way or another as Liquid Trio Experiment 2.

it'll definitely be on ytsejam records - the small label set up for all the dream theater official bootlegs.

And shredsymph, there will be an official live CD/DVD release too.

Re: Liquid Tension Experiment- 10th anniversary show - INCREDIBLE

Hi All, I joined this great forum to share my experience and point out a GREAT bootleg of the Chicago show. First off, hell of a show, saw them on 6/28/2008 at The Independent in San Francisco. Hands down best concert i've attended, probably, ever.
I was so blown away by the performance that I spent some time looking for a bootleg that would help me recapture the moment. The link below has a convenient torrent (or download each track individually) for Chicago late show. You DO NOT want to miss it.
