Metallica with new drummer...
... OK so it was only for one gig. Anyone hear about this? My mate just went to the download festival (quite ironic Metallica were playing, but lets not get off subject) and Lars Ulrich couldn't play for some reason and aparently went off to hospital. Well Metallica still played but with Dave Lombardo, drummer from SLAYER and Joey Jordison, drummer from SLIPKNOT! OH yeah and Flemming Larsen, Lars drum tech also stood in.
Ok so it was only for one gig, but that must have been amazing to see. Anyone lucky enough to have seen that? More inof on their website.

Lucky break for that tech -- now he can put "played drums for Metallica" on his resume, much like James' roadie can put that he played guitar because of James' pyro accident.

Yeah, my mates were there. I was gutted cos I was on holiday abroad at the time!
My mates said they were awesome. We only go for Metallica because we are mad about them. But Joey from Slipknot played practically the whole set. Apparently Dave Lombardo and Fleming Larsen were crap! But Joey was awesome, and knew every song perfectly. At one point James lent over and said "When do we get some masks?" which I thought was rather ammusing.
My mates also saw Slayer, Slipknot etc whilst they were there. They actually thought that Slipknot was the best. They were awesome apparently, especially with Mick and Jim soloing and shredding!
I was gutted that I couldnt go - bloody mothers fault for booking holiday!

I've heard two rumours about Lars' skipping the show:
1) He was very very sick and had to go to a hospital.
2) He was arguing with the band and may not come back.
Kinda convenient he skipped a show at the "Download" festival
I noticed something when I saw them on the MTV awards last year doing a medley:
Lars is a better drummer than Meg White of the White Stripes (doesn't say much
) and a worse drummer than Dave Grohl in his Nirvana days.
While I love what Lars brought to Metallica and have to say that they wouldn't sound the same without him, I'd be interested to hear them do an album without him and see how they sound.

I'd love to see a video of Metallica with Joey on drums, he's one monster of a player IMO, lots of awesome fills and insane double bass

Agreed!
Though, after listening back to some old Metallica, I love the slight unevenness of Lars' double-kick fills sometimes, it just gives it that unique Lars signature.

He's already back. He only missed one show and they picked right up where they left off a day or two later.

Even though I agree with you, in Rhythem magazine (I think it was that one) he got rated one of the worst percussionists.

Sorry, I just don't understand why their opinion matters.

He's decent, but probably not worth a lot of the hype he gets. He's certainly better than me. But then, I'm a guitarist.
Seriously, though, I think Metallica, without him, would end up a very different band. Of course, after hearing St. Anger, maybe that's not so bad a deal. I long for the Master of Puppets days...

Joey might not have the chops of
Mike Portnoy
but his drumming is perfect for his music style, besides you can really feel his agression and feeling in his playing, not so much drummers can accomplish that
