Music at 16 years old
What kind of music did you listen to when you were 16? My friends think I'm weird because I like listening to jazz, new age, and lighter forms of rock (Porcupine Tree, Platypus, etc.) Hard rock and metal just seemed to get boring for me all of a sudden.

Shred and Metal. Other genres as well, but these were the main ones.

Lets see.. I'm still 16 for another 2 weeks...
Heavy Metal!! Namely Thrash. Can't be without my Megadeth, Testament, Overkill, Metallica, Anthrax, Exodus, Kreator, Suicidal Tendencies...
But its any kind of Metal. Nevermore and Tool (well, Tool are semi-Metal...) are my favorite bands. Others I adore are Fates Warning, Type O Negative,
Strapping Young Lad
, Faith No More Dream Theater, Amon Amarth, Death, Dio, Black Sabbath, Himsa, Helmet, Anathema, My Dying Bride, Immortal, Napalm Death... Countless, countless others.
I also like my Grunge/Sludge. Alice in Chains, Down, Corrosion of Conformity, Melvins, Soundgarden...
And Punk, Hardcore, Ska... Agnostic Front, Floorpunch, Catch 22, Suicide Machines, A Life Once Lost...
Everything else... I Mother Earth, The Smashing Pumpkins, Rush...
The musicians... Steve Vai, Joe Satriani,
Yngwie Malmsteen
, Eric Johnson...
This doesn't even cover 1/10th of my list of bands/artists/musicians I listen to.

Same as Davester, but throw in
Stevie Ray
, Pink Floyd,
Tommy Emmanuel
, and massive doses of Megadeth and Alice In Chains.

Hmm, miscellaneus rock and metal: Metallica, Pantera, U2, Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Muse, Radiohead, some Satriani...Living Colour. RHCP, REM, Dire Straits, Cream, Zeppelin, Soundgarden
I also listened to a lot of blues and jazz: Buddy Guy, Muddy Waters, BB, Clapton, SRV, Mike Stern, Medeski Martin & Wood, Al di Meola,
Miles Davis
, Coltrane, Herbie Han****...a lot of it came from my father, who was a big jazz and blues fan, so It all grew on me at a pretty young age
Most of this I still listen to, but I branched out in different directions by now, on one hand getting into
Death Metal
, on the other into more Jazz, Fusion etc..., and also recently started listening to some singer/songwriter acoustic music, electronica, some world music etc...

Since I've had guitar lessons, my mind has opened to every other type of music imaginable. Metal/Shred is still my main love but I listen to loads of other music. Take some albums off my WMP playlist for example:
Original Hardcore:The Nu Breed (Dance/Happy Hardcore)
Alien Love Secrets
Children Of Bodom - Follow The Reaper
N.E.R.D. - In Search Of...
Foo Fighters - One By One
P.O.D. - Satellite
Cypress Hill - Skull + Bones
Hendrix - Voodoo Child Greatest Hits
I also have stuff by Britney Spears, Ja Rule and 2pac and loads and loads of Metallica!
Joe
P.S (I'm 16 just now
)
EDIT: How could I forget! I love electroclash/electronica style stuff like Scissor Sisters, Felix Da Housecat and stuff like that. I don't know too many artists because I only usually here it when my brother is home (he loves that stuff)

At 16 it was Vai, Zapppa and Satriani. Didn't really listen to anything else.

ayay man, that's exactly the way it went here...Nowadays I really kick on virtuosity applied to good music; it doesn't really matter what instrument (well, guitar ofcourse rules
). And there are A LOT of good musicians out there, with 90% of them underestimated...

I had extremely strange tastes when I was 16 (at least in comparison to my friends.)
Even though I had gotten my first Ibanez a couple of years earlier, I was still into non-guitar oriented music. As a kid, I had a HUGE vinyl & 8-track collection (still do actually!). I was majorly into the Beatles & the Beach Boys. I've always been floored by the great vocal harmonies that Brian Wilson put together. I was an all-out Beatles freak too. Then I found my mom's Led Zeppelin and Cream albums and started to get into more guitar-centric stuff. Eventually, I became addicted to concerts and got into G'n'R, Skid Row, VH, Ozzy, etc. I was 17-18 by that time, and G'n'R were at their peak.
I'm still a sucker for "Pet Sounds" or "Rubber Soul" though

When I first started listening to *my own* music, I liked Eddie Rabbit and the Spinners! LOL! Then I bought Queen's The Game after hearing Another One Bites The Dust. Soon after that a kid sold me some records that included J. Giel's Freeze Frame and VH's Women And Children First. Soon after I bought every VH record that came out. Then came Judas Priest, Ratt,
Motley Crue
, Dio, and a couple Ozzy records. Before I knew it, I was an 80s hairband freak! Still am.

I must be getting old - had to think about this for a long time! I think I was going through a huge Rush phase at the time. Moving Pictures was rarely out of my CD player.
