Need new music to listen to

I've been listening to mainly 80's/early 90's rock/hr/metal. I'd like to know what is good to listen to now? Can be rock/hr/metal/country/instrumental or anything. I don't really like cookie monster vocals, but I really like Children of Bodem. Old stuff that I listen to included priest, maiden, DT, VH, Lep, Dio, Scorps, Rammstein, COB, Chet Atkins and so forth. If you guys can point me towards some new stuff, I'd love to check out new music with great guitar work.

Thanx,
Pete

NeverMore, Chimaira, Shadows Fall, Lamb Of God, Trivium...I mostly listen to the dark side of metal,

Disturbed's guitarist has said to include some more detailed guitar work in their new CD, might want to try that.

just, stay away from Green Day, Simple Plan and Avril....

Re: Need new music to listen to

What Sabu said.
You must check out Lamb of God, Shadows Fall - they are awesome bands. Their guitarists are incredible too. If good guitar work is what your after, be prepared to be impressed.

You could also check out Dragon Force, they are a really cool metal band also. Not as heavy as the others, but the guitar work is great. Herman "Shred" Li, their guitarist, is great.

God Forbid are another great metal band with awesome leads/solos. I regularly listen to them too.
And if you havent already, it may be an idea to check out Killswitch Engage, Nightwish.

There's new DT out there, Yngwie's new "Unleash The Fury" (just got it yesterday)
and you may want to check out Strapping Young Lads for really heavy stuff.

Unfortunately, there really isn't alot of good new music available at this time..(IMHO)

Thanks for the info guys - I'll check out all of that stuff. I stopped listening to "new" music, except for for Dream Theater after 1995, so keep the suggestions coming.

gotta watch out for crimson. they have at least 4 COMPLETELY different periods within 15 years where their music has drastically changed. Red, Larks Tongue in Aspic, Discipline, THRAK, and three of a perfect pair are great places to start. varied music.

peirre bensusan is one of the greatest musicians of all time. definately worth checking out live. ive seen him 2x and talked to him both times and hes a great wonderful person whos absolutely owns the instrument.

michael hedges RIP. aerial boundaries...thats all you need to know.

i'll second the Johnny Hiland - he was so cool and nice at last winter NAMM to pose for pics and sign stuff for me. what a super player - so refreshing to listen to someone who loves to play as much as he does.

Re: Need new music to listen to

These suggestions might seem a bit strange for jemsite, but each of them have worthwhile guitar playing. Some are older, some are newer but I think I've learned something from each:

eric johnson - venus isle
u2 - how to dismantle an atomic bomb
john mayer - room for squares, any given thursday, heavier things
mae - destination: beautiful
pat metheny - works
brandtson - send us a signal
starting line - make yourself at home
michael hedges - aerial boundaries

of course, I'd also recommend many works by Steve Vai, but I sort of assumed you already listen to him. If not- Alien Love Secrets and Real Illusions are good starts.

Re: Need new music to listen to

the newer melodic metal/power metal bands from overseas are just amazing and energizing. some of my favorite bands that I've recently discovered are:
Adagio (Underworld)
Sonata Arctica (Ecliptica)
Nightwish
Evergrey (recreation day)
Iced Earth (the glorious burden)

The band Adagio is especially good, if you check out anyone from my list, i would say check them out - they're incredible!

DT's new album Octavarium is good, as is Nine Inch Nails "with teeth" which is a throwback to an earlier nin sound

[edit]
oh my, almost forgot Opeth! good starting albums to get into Opeth are "blackwater park" and "still life" both well rounded in their sound as a whole. Their new album ghost reveries is coming out at the end of the month, and the preview tracks from their website seem promising.
