Re: New Metallica album - sounds promising

They lost it after Justice... Black wasn't as bad as what followed, but it was too commercial and a sign of things to come.

Re: New Metallica album - sounds promising

+1 on that. The previews all remind me, funnily enough, of how I felt listening to Motley Crue's latest single/album. Sounded like a re-hash of what they had done before. Obviously one cannot expect totally new things in such a repetitive genre, still... removing the wah (or adding an unwah hahahaha) would have been a change.

At least, they can (again) say something like "we've gone back to our roots man, and its hot hot hot"

In any case, I enjoy lots of their material, and I'll surely download this album as soon as I can.

Re: New Metallica album - sounds promising

Firstly, I'm not one of those on the bandwagon commercial black album was the best type metallica fans. Justice and puppets are my ultimate favorite albums but I still enjoy the albums that followed. Even though Black was very simple and load and reload had this whole country rock twang to it, I still can appreciate whats awesome about it. The melody and the aggression is still there just in a slightly less aggressive genre. Loved them all to be honest..... and then there was st anger. I can blame my disappointment on st anger on the writing techniques, since james n lars weren't writing the vocal melodies on their own and god knows what drove them to drop tune there guitars even more and make the drums sound like buckets. Even so.... the clips in that link don't have the st anger elements that I hate so I'm keen to hear it. Apologies to anyone I've offended for my liking to load and reload.. and for all others that agree with me.... grow some balls and stand up for the band that gave us sooooooooooooo many awesome songs. Hehe

Re: New Metallica album - sounds promising

Metallica is another one of those bands that whether you love 'em or hate 'em you really can't deny their influence on heavy music. Without Metallica, Trivium doesn't even exist.

That said, I have not been a fan since the mid 90's and I won't be going out of my way to get this new album unless it's an ass kicker... which I just don't see happening. I hope they prove me wrong.

As far as Hammet's playing is concerned is it just me or is his intonation always just a little "off"? I don't mean the intonation on his guitar; I mean the way he frets a note. He always seems just a tiny bit sharp or flat.

I for one am excited.

I heard some great riffs in the mission metallica video, and what sounded like a snippet from a pretty bangin solo.

It actually feels good to be excited about a metallica record again.

Re: New Metallica album - sounds promising

I've been a fan since the early days and still am a fan. I have been looking forward to the new album, but am trying not get my hopes up that it's going to be as good as the first few albums.
I liked everything up to and including the Black Album. MOP and AJFA are my favourites There were a few tracks from Load and Re-load that I grew to like, but I generally disliked most of those albums. Hated St Anger!! I heard it and my reaction was WTF!!!

I've listened to a few snippets of the new album and I wasn't exactly blown away with what I heard. BUT I'll wait for it to come out in September before making any real judgements

I have to say I am excited, but I hope it is better then St Anger. That was the only true Metallica studio album that I didnot like every song off of. In fact I think I only liked two songs.

Re: New Metallica album - sounds promising

I remeber hanging out with my best friend when I was about 9 or 10 and his older brother had this music on that I couldn't ignore. It was the first time that music couldn't just be in the background for me. It was the first time music sounded like a journey. It was Metallica. Ever since Black I've been disapointed but I still have a shred of hope they can come partially back to their old glory. That music made guitar more than just a fun thing to do. It became like a quest to be like that band. When I see old footage of Metallica I still think "Whoa those guys look like lords and generals of some army that I have to join."

If they can get anywhere near that again I would be happy. But, as they probably won't I'm not getting my hopes up too high.

I really like the Moscow footage but, any footage of them before '93 I would say is great.

Re: New Metallica album - sounds promising

Even though I haven't cared for much since the black album(although I think Load would have been much more appreciated had Metallica not made it) I am enthusiastic to hear the new album. If Hammett plays/practices and takes lessons as much as he claims, with so much recent 'downtime' I'd hope his solos are getting better. I hope his tone improves, and yes, please a solo w/out the wah!
