Are you saying James is the one stepping on the wah all the time?
kidding. Personally I don't mind the wah once in a while.

Re: New Metallica album - sounds promising
To preface this statement, I love
Joe Satriani
he is my favorite guitarist, and I am not a fan of the Hamett "just wah it," solo, but why don't people ride Satch this hard about how much he uses his wah? And if you checked over half of Satch's songs use the wah in the melody and I'm sure 90% use the wah to some extent. That's definately more than Hammett uses it. I know he is infinitely better than Hamett at it, but he sure does use it a lot.

Because he only uses it to alter his tone and add texture. Hammet uses the wah to make it sound like he's playing faster

What? Like he's playing faster. I never thought a wah made you sound "faster."

I kind of understand that....but I just think Kirk uses the Wah cause he simply likes the sound of wah hehe.
I'm definitely not a fan of wah though.

Hammett's best solos have been ones without wah.... food for thought.

Everyone I think agrees with that in this thread.
Just to clarify I'm not a Hammet fan or think he is amazing or that he is better with a wah. I just wondered why people say "no more wah Hammet," but not "no more wah Joe."

Re: New Metallica album - sounds promising
Speaking for myself, Satch has written some memorable tunes with wah and they don't sound alike.

It's hard to explain. But one of the reasons a lot of kids use a
wah pedal
is because when engaged and you've got the rocker set all the way forward, and you 'wah' the pedal in small intervals, it's like the strings have more attack. It almost sounds like your
alternate picking
is faster

Re: New Metallica album - sounds promising
Although the best albums are puppets, ajfa and hmm maybe black album, they have some cool stuff on Load and ReLoad. I really like the solo in 2x4 on Load, think the whole song is awesome. I'm currently learning the solo in The Struggle Within from black album.

cause it sounds bad when kirk uses it and great when joe uses it. lol. ok, maybe that's an oversimplification, but joe definitely has much more finesse with the wah pedal than kirk.
honestly i don't know what happened with kirk. my favorite kirk solos where the ones where he cleaned up mustaine's solo's from kill 'em all. it was all blazing pentatonic runs, but it was clean and very schenker-esque with ballsy tone. things started to change as soon as ride the lightning when song structures became more complicated and when (i assume) he started taking lessons with joe. i just wish he'd improve his phrasing and spend like 30 minutes a day working to control that vibrato.

Re: New Metallica album - sounds promising
I love kirks solos..... i do realise they are not terribly complicated but kirk has a good sense of melody with his solos. I think his perfect amount of wah was during puppets and justice solo's where the wah was used mostly to alter the tone, not alter phrasing. From Black onward I think he overused the wah and its gotten progressively worse over time.
