New Metallica album - sounds promising

Metallica has launched a new site to allow fans behind the scenes of the new album, which will be wrapped up next week for a September release.

http://www.missionmetallica.com/

There are clips of new songs scattered throughout the video stuff on the site. Sounds like the tight Hetfield-only rhythm work of the pre-Load days is back.

I'm sure there are enough Metallibashing threads here (hell, I probably started some of them) so can we try to keep this about the new album?

Late 80s-Early 90s Lars would support that. With Rick Rubin producing the album I think it may be good, but Im not going to hold my breath.

Edit: after checking it out, the clips sounded better than everything else post-Justice, but still not worth buying. Hopefully that's not the best of what they have.

How is the production of the new stuff? My biggest gripe with St. Anger was that it just sounded horrible. Sounded like somebody put one mic up in a storage unit and told 'em to get in there and start playing. Please tell me they kept Lars away from the ProTools this time.

Judging by the video, the production sounds a lot tighter than St Anger... kind of like the Black Album but without all that reverb.

Re: New Metallica album - sounds promising

I think the thing is that St. Anger was such a god awful disgrace that anything even remotely better by the fellas will seem a blessing by comparison. I still can't see them going back to their old glory unfortunately, and I'm afraid I've written them off as dead (in terms of new music) since late 1990.

That said, I will definitely listen to this new album when it comes out and give it a fair chance. Metallica's early stuff is some of my fave music of all time. And might I say, its nice to see Kirk playing solos again. I've forgotten what that sounds like.

OK, heres what Metallica needs to do, bring all the guys from Trivium into the studio, record the album, then put Metallica's name on the CD's, there, problem solved.

HAH! So true!!

When I first heard stuff like entrance of the conflagration I was just stunned by how Heafy was a-ok with sounding 100% like Hetfield. Honestly at some parts of the song if i closed my eyes I couldve sworn it was James. It's true though, some Trivium songs are better than anything Metallica's done in the last 16 years or so.

I agree Metallica is long past their glory days and only survives due to a fluffy puppy fanbase and their franchise name.
They have not done anything to impress me in ages and I do not even check out their stuff anymore. St. Anger was such a joke, I nearly lost my breakfast when I saw the video...

Megadeth FTW!

That includes "Risk" too!

I always like Megadeth better. Never much liked Metallica...

When they used to say we'll never do videos EVER!! Then went and did "One" which I liked a lot, it was kind of over at that point...

It can only help metal all around for them to have a good showing on the new disc...

I shouldn't derail the conversation with childish rants on how Megadeth is better.
I'd like to see a decent Metallica album, but I'm not banking on one. The last full album I liked was Justice.
And I hope Rick Rubin has the good sense to pick up Kirk's wah, thow it out, and say "enough of that crap!" LOL!

From the few snippets in that vid it all sounds the same to me. Chunky Black album style riff's without the clean-surgical distorted tone of the Black album (has the more organic tone of Load instead).

Oh, and *sigh*... I don't think they threw Hammett's wah out.

Actually, it would be better if they sell it and buy some scales books with the money. You know, no more phrygian/pentatonic soloing

Re: New Metallica album - sounds promising

kirk is actually quite knowledgable regarding scales. his main issue imo is his shrill vibrato and haphazard phrasing. although i do enjoy some of his older solos for some reason.
