New Porcupine Tree DVD

Anyone else grab it yet? I picked it up on my lunch break today. I'm not sure I'll get a chance to watch it tonight (I've got a date that I'm seriously considering bailing on to gho home and watch a DVD of a band I saw live like five days ago - is that wrong? ), but if not tonight then tomorrow.

I'm pretty fired up - I caught these guys twice on this tour, and they were incredible.

I'll probably pick it up soon.... didn't feel like paying $30 for it at the Berklee PAC, though. The Boston show was awesome, and I'm excited about the new (that is, upcoming) record because of the new songs they played. Too bad Steve kind of lost his voice at the end of the show.

Interesting name for a band. It reminds me of the time I was walking in the
woods, heard a rustle, and turned and saw a porcupine climbing up a tree about
a foot from my head. I'm pretty sure it was not carrying a guitar, though...

Re: New Porcupine Tree DVD

I am really gutted I missed the London show - I only just moved here, and wasn't yet up to date...

I'd probably pick the DVD up at some point - I am on a tight budget at the moments, so that might not happen for a while...

Re: New Porcupine Tree DVD

Picked this up on Wednesday and also saw them in Los Angeles that same night. Amazing show. They used the first 45 minutes to perform new material from their upcoming album in order to get 'feedback' and try it out in a live setting. The second half of the show focused on their recent albums (but threw in "Buying New Soul" which was a nice treat). I watched the DVD last night and loved the performance and the audio. I still have to say that Steven Wilson manages to get some great live tones. It doesn't hurt that he's using PRS guitars and BadCat amps . I had GAS during the whole show watching him go from a PRS CU22 Artist to a gorgeous Singlecut Trem. I may have to add a PRS to my stable pretty soon.

Yeah, the PRS BadCat combination sounds incredible, I saw them in May '05 and it was one of the best shows I've been to.

How is the new material sounding so far?

Some pretty heavy stuff, very remniscent of "Deadwing". They have a new tune which clocks in around 15 minutes in length which started off with a clean, down-tuned Les Paul, drenched in some delay, very Cure-souding to my ears. Midway through, it turns into poyrythymic bliss ala Meshuggah and then segues back into the clean part at the end. No song titles were given, but PT fans have nicknamed this track "The Beast". From what Wilson said during the show, they haven't even properly recorded the new material yet, but hope to have sessions finished by the end of this year. Ultimately, the new CD would likely be released in the first half of '07.

As an added bonus, the Tony Levin Band was the opening act. While I'm not a bassist, I'm a huge fan of most of Levin's work wheter it was with King Crimson, Peter Gabriel, or (of course) Liquid Tension Experiment. Getting to stand less than 10 feet from the man while he worked the Chapman Stick was very humbling.
