Re: "newer" guitar virtuosos appreciation thread
i like govan and the erotic cakes cd, but i somewhat agree with fretrunnr that it isn't very revolutionary. his technique and phrasing are superb, but i feel as though i can hear his influences (greg howe, vai, etc.) there's nothing wrong with that, it is what it is. which are good instrumental tunes with good melodies and complex arrangements. nothing new, but good music is good music regardless of how innovative it is.
i like
jeff loomis
. he's not really 'new' (nevermore has been around for about 10 years), but he is awesome nonetheless.

Guthrie is a master of every style it seems on the guitar and his tones/phrasing/playing/everything is top notch, and I can't even begin to see how it's boring.
YouTube Guthrie's 'Fives', 'Ner Ner', anything actually and buy 'Erotic Cakes', I think he's the next 'big' solo guitarist.
As for new guitarists copying old guitarists, isn't that what playing the guitar is all about apart from having your own style? You learn licks/songs from your influences and usually subconciously it becomes apart of your playing style.
How many people started to tap like EVH in the late 80's/early 90's? It's just like that.
Rant Over.

Yea, I think guitarists have to be 'up-to-date'. Today a guitarist is pretty much expected to be able to do some two-handed tapping and some
sweep picking
and all that.
It's just become part of contemporary styles of guitar music.

I agree that your influences do just that, but I still don't think that Guthrie has what it takes to be the next "
Joe Satriani
". He may have what it takes to be the next
Allan Holdsworth
though, which some would say is even better
OK, enough of the negativity, whether we agree on GG or not, everyone admits he's one hell of a guitarist.
Lets hear about some other new guitarists to list too.

I hadn't heard of
Guthrie Govan
until this thread. By his name he sounded like he might be some spacey, foreign, pseudo, fusiony player who might not get me understanding where he's coming from. Went to U tube and OH MY GOD!!
Shades of Dimeola-Vai with a dash of Ritenour to my ear...Whatever it is he's trying to get across, I liked it a lot.
Also glad to see a long haired guy. I'm pro long hair for musicians...

Doug Aldrich
really surprised me in whitesnake's last dvd.Great playing and tone however I'm really tired of pentatonic boxes and how they sound.I think 99% of guitarists play those boxes and use them in the same way,I can't stand them anymore.
Still amazing dvd.

Yes. He is probably the best new player in the past 10 years and only continues to impress. My favorite by far.

He doesn't have any solo music, he mainly plays within Necrophagist, however I agree he is a lot different than many other players and is fantastic.
The easiest video to find of just his music is in the Ibanez Xiphos video they made, just skip forward a bit.
