NiN: With Teeth, heard it? what do you think?

I think it's a fantastic album. It's a combination of the stuff he did on fragile and his earlier stuff. It sounds fantastic. It's very stripped for a NIN album. All of the stuff on the record you can easily hear being done by a little 5-6 piece rock band (ok that's not so little) I was wondering if anyone else had heard it and would give their opinion. I've always been a big fan and it seems to have been the only constant since my tastes have..... matured...

Re: NiN: With Teeth, heard it? what do you think?

Just picked it up. Even though I complained about it in another thread after hearing a stream on myspace.com, it's been growing on me exponentially. For everything similar to the last album there is something else completely different, like the songwriting direction, so it seems like more of another cohesive "chapter" of The Fragile. It may be my favorite record of the year and a reason to buy that $40 audio cable for my stereo so I can listen to the Dolby 5.1 mix.

I'm starting to warm up to it.
At first I wasn't so into it but after a second listen I'm really enjoying it.
It isn't The Fragile but its good.

I think it's a better album than 'The Fragile' personally. It's going back to NIN's roots as far as its sound goes. It's got a lot more of the vibe that 'Pretty Hate Machine' had.

'Only' is a great track, absolutely love it !

It's definitely a grower! I wasn't sure to begin with but I'm really beginning to like it now.

It's very different from the fragile, but I think that's a good thing (I loved the fragile but another double CD epic would have been a bit much).

Definitely a fan of this CD. Can't wait to pick up the DualDisc and hear it in 5.1 surround. I love everything NIN's put out, especially from The Downward Spiral and after (I feel NIN really found their signature sound on that album, and have only improved from there).

Re: NiN: With Teeth, heard it? what do you think?

Here's my track-by-track review:

All The Love In The World
Mellow start to the CD, cool sound overall. Ends with an almost gospel feel. Really cool song, one of my favorites.

You Know What You Are
A quick drum beat on this one, similar feel to "Wish". When it gets to the chorus it gets nice and heavy, though I almost want it to get heavier, more guitar-based when it hits the chorus. The haunting piano line over top is really cool though. The bridge mellows out, even though the drums keep going. Cool feel overall. The ending is really neat, brings out the haunting piano line even more and developes that part of the song for a bit.

The Collector
Mainly drums and fuzzed-out bass in the beginning of this one. Some interesting guitar work that sounds almost like a synth at times. I'm actually having trouble figuring out if there is anything synth on this one, minus some really low-mixed texture things. Cool piano part near the end, almost sounds out of place, but fits at the same time.

The Hand That Feeds
Usually the first single is the song I learn to hate on an album since I've heard it so often, but this is one of those that hasn't gotten to that point. I love it. It's simple at first glance, but it's catchy as well as being layered, it's cool. It's simple because it doesn't need anything else, not because they couldn't do anything else.

Love Is Not Enough
Interesting sound to this one. Nothing completely outstanding, would fit in on most of NIN's previous albums. A simple guitar solo sort of thing in the bridge, some cool vocal effects buried underneath. Simple overall. I hope it isn't released as a single, because I don't think it would work well, too slow maybe.

Every Day is Exactly the Same
One of my favorite songs on the album. Intro reminds me of "Just Like You Imagined", but it leads into something I've never heard from NIN before. It's really cool sounding. Would make a good contribution to a movie soundtrack. I really really love this song. Starts out simple, but builds up to a huge climax. Awesome song.

With Teeth
This one didn't immediately grab me, but it's growing on me. Cool drumming on this one. A little too straightforward at times maybe. It's got a very typical NIN feel. The bridge makes this song for me though. It drops down to really quiet bass, piano, voice ("I can not go through this again" repeated), some synth textures, and a cool synth solo. All really really quiet and mellow, a really dramatic contrast to the rest of the song. One of the things I've loved about NIN's last couple albums. This one would fit in well on The Downward Spiral (the second half of the CD specifically).

Only
The intro made me think of K-os' "Man I Used To Be" right away. This sone almost sounds happy minus the vocals. Not one of my personal favorite songs, but not bad at all. Some cool sounds. From what Trent said on nin.com, this song was done almost entirely in Ableton Live after not being able to figure out where to go with it for a long time.

Getting Smaller
Some cool guitar work on this one. This is a full-out rocker mainly. Someone I know said it sounds like something Queens of the Stone Age would put out, and I don't entirely disagree. I bet this one's awesome live. Heavy guitar riffs all around.

Sunspots
A mellow song mainly. Not a bad song, fits the spot on the album well, though on its own I wouldn't listen to it very often. But then, I almost never listen to Nine Inch Nails for single songs, and almost always listen to entire albums.

The Line Begins To Blur
This is sort of the "beginning of the end" of the album, as I almost can't listen to any of the last three songs individually. They work really well together. This one's got lots of cool "speaker ripping apart" sounds on it, and an almost mellow chorus, despite the nasty synths and drums in the verses. Cool ending to this one, with a bit of a guitar solo kind of thing. This one starts angry, but mellows down towards the ending, leading perfectly into the next track.

Beside You In Time
I love this song. It's one chord for most of the song, but not boring. I could listen to that droning...noise? for hours. I can't tell if it's synth, strings, guitar (w/ebow or sustainer), or some combination of the three. Really hypnotic for the most part. This song just builds and builds, so extremely slowly it's almost painful. When it finally hits its breaking point, it's truly amazing. This song's a perfect example of built-up tension and release. And the vocals stay extremely mellow throughout. I can't listen to only part of this song. I start it playing, and I get drawn in so deep that I don't even realize how long I've been listening until it's almost over, even when I consciously try to only listen to part of it then skip on, I can't.

Right Where It Belongs
Really soft and mellow song. Great closing track. Finishes off the album perfectly. When the "telephone voice" effect dissolves away near the end and the full frequency spectrum comes back to the track it's almost like a release from the tension built up over the last two tracks. This song almost has a nursery rhyme feel to it in places, like a really dark lullaby. The song ends with exactly the same feel as the "Still" album, which I love.

Re: NiN: With Teeth, heard it? what do you think?

Good review. Seeing the new songs performed live really bolstered my appreciation them, especially "The Line Begins to Blur" and "With Teeth." I never thought I'd see Trent rocking the tamborine like Ian Astbury (sic), but it worked. No two ways about it though, NIN is amazing live and seeing them in a small club was simply beyond words. At the show I went to (5/12 Boston), they played the song "Everything"- whose lyrics are in the .pdf liner notes to the new album but is apparently going to be on the next one. The next night, they apparently didn't play it- I think they played "The Wretched" at the beginning instead.

Nice. I wish I could have seen them when they hit Toronto.

From what I hear, Trent's already working on the next album, and wants to have it out later this year if he can. Since he's cleaned up his creativity and productivity seems to have gone through the roof
