Re: Player's tone that you like and why (a continuation of the funky jem project :-P)

Allan Holdsworth

His tone is probably the most distinctive out of anyone else out there. I heard that he likes to turn the mids up and the bass & treble down -- pretty much the opposite of most other guitar players, especially metal players who tend to scoop out the mids and terrify small animals with bass resonance.

His approach is not like any other guitarist either, in fact he doesn't even like the guitar, apparently. He only started because he couldn't afford a saxophone. Holdsworth approaches his instrument like Coltrane approached his. The end result is just beautiful.

Let's also consider his clean / chord tones, not just lead tone. Again, those are just as distinctive and very beautiful.

Guthrie Govan

Far too few people have even heard of Guthrie, but this UK player is pure dynamite. He uses Cornford amps and Suhr guitars, and his sound is pretty damn tasty, to say the least. Listen to his album Erotic Cakes to hear some great tube tones and incredible playing.

EDIT: Oh, I just noticed, these two tone monsters are both UK guys. How nice.

oh now see, i really like cornford's clarity (the mk50h)!... awesome! :]
I know someone else who uses cornford and suhr... Greg Howe! (i have a feeling richie kotzen got him to use them?) he has good tone too.. :]

When I created this thread I was actually thinking of mentioning Jerry Sims... I hadn't heard of him before I saw the 7th heaven video but mannn he had such a great jazz tone.... sounded awesome!

Without putting thought into it...

Stevie Ray Vaughan
Slash
Jerry Cantrell
John Frusciante

I am sure there are others, but those are the first to pop into my head. I like them all for different reasons, but in general I like a thicker "drunk" sound.

I haven't finished...

Jimi Hendrix

Need I actually say anything? Listen to Little Wing. I wonder exactly how many players have been inspired by his sound?

CC DeVille

LOL. OK, that was a joke.

I can really enjoy someones playing without fully digging their tone (ala Dimebag), or vice versa.

I like so much more about Hendrix's playing than just his sound. SRV and Hendrix have such a "loose" style of playing, and it is hard (for me at least) to get the same vibe.

Doug Aldrich's studio and live tones both do it for me. Hella flava.

On rythm parts I love his tone on "Push" with Dio off Killing the Dragon and on solo his tone on Love Aint No Stranger on the first Live WS Album (new lineup).

If I could get those tones all within a 7 string setting, Id be set.

From an instrumental tone perspective - Guthrie Govan all day long. Not only can he play his ass off, his tone is very pleasing to my ear.
