Yes, this was a good week for me in regards to new music dvd's
First up, i got an advance copy of the new "G3-Live In Tokyo" dvd.
John Petrucci- he plays 2 songs, both from his solo album, and although i always respected his abilities i was never a fan before, but damn, he really impressed me here. I expected soul-less shredding, but the music was melodic, interesting, and grooving. He has an awesome sound, and i was impressed with the way he combined his chops with feeling. I might have to buy that cd of his now

One funny thing- he's not much of a "showman"; in fact, there's one point towards the end of the second song where it looks like he's just realizing "hey, there's an audience here watching us!!!"
Steve Vai- "the Audience is Listening" is not one of my favorites, and this performance didn't change my mind, but at least we didn't have to listen to the annoying taped background voices of the teacher and kid, and that pretentious spoken middle section. He then did 2 songs from the new album, and i liked "Building The Church", it had some cool things going on, but i just find so much of what he does to be too over the top and self-indulgent. I was hoping for some relief with "K'm Pee-Do-Wee", but even that degenerated into ****ing . Ah well, maybe next time....
Satch- Although i hate the
digitech whammy pedal (most overrated effect ever IMO), i dug the track "Searching". It was good to see some extended improv. The other 2 tunes just didn't hold my interest.
The G3 "jam"- okay, someone please for god's sake start a petition to ask Satch to stop singing. He
murders "Foxey Lady". They also do "La Grange", which is a nice change of pace with it's boogie feel, and "Smoke On The Water", which is cool too- i like when people pick obscure tunes to cover
One thing about the jam- Steve seemed to almost be "not into it" while they were playing, making me wonder if he was sick or something.
So overall, this dvd was a nice surprise in regards to my opinion of John Petrucci.
I'll be interested in seeing what others think of this dvd on tuesday when it comes out.
Next, i got "Roger Waters-In The Flesh". This has to be one of the best music dvd's i've ever seen. The entire band sounds incredible, and the setlist covers just about all of my favorite Pink Floyd songs. Most of the guitar solos are done by Doyle Bramhall II and Snowy White, and they do an amazing job re-creating Gilmour's masterpieces, as well as playing their own stuff.
If you're a fan of Pink Floyd, you should definitely check this one out.
Last, i got Paul Gilbert- "Space Ship Live". I don't know if it was here or on another forum where somone was complaining that this dvd was boring, but that guy must've had the sound off while he was watching. This is Paul and his band playing live in the studio, mostly songs from his "Space Ship One" album, with some older ones thrown in too, and personally, this is exactly the kind of thing i love to watch. Perfect sound, great camerawork of the musicians, and no bullsh*t- just great songs and incredible
guitar playing.
All those guys in the other thread arguing that Yngwie is better than Paul should really check this out- i'd like to see Yngwie stop playing E Harmonic minor long enough to write a song even half as good as any of these songs on this dvd. Of course that's just my personal opinion
So yeah, overall a good week for musical inspiration!!!!!!
peace
