Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM
I dont even own any
ibanez guitars
anymore, and rarely if ever listen to Vai. I come to Jemsite because it is the best place on the internet to talk about guitars and gear in general. It is a great community that just happens to be centered around something I don't have much interest in.
Oh ya.... Satch's new album is great...!

Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM
I feel a little weird owning what's essentially a Vai signature model too (a UVPWH), but it's pound for pound the best seven I've ever played, so...
Anyway, good to know I'm not alone.

Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM
Well, the love of the guitars is more ubiquitous than the adoration of Steve, that's true
I like Steve, he definitely is passionate and has skills few can even comprehend, and also seems like a genuinely nice guy. That said, I'd grab a new Hiromi CD first.
Anyway, back to Satch!

Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM
Same here, I definitely am in awe of the man's technique, and respect the guy for pursuing his musical vision, mainstream be damned. I just don't enjoy listening to him much.
Satch's playing is REALLY understated on this one - it only really jumped out at me after a couple listens that there just aren't that many fast solos until you get to the end of the disc. Revelation has a great lead, but it's awfully mellow, you know?

Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM
hmm i don't know, from what i've heard so far im not enjoying his new album too much. To me it isn't too far away from his last album, similar song structures and repeated ideas.
Maybe it will grow on me? lol.

Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM
i read somewhere that he likes that specific song structure because it is similar to that of jazz standards. you play the head (main melody) once or twice, then comes the solo and then you end by restating the head. most of his tunes (from all of his cds) have had this structure, with minor variations.

Yeah, but I happen to like some of the mellow stuff. You can really hear some of the variations he's playing on riffs and how hard it is to play stuff like that and sound GOOD.
While I'd love face melting solo's from Satch like anybody else... he's already got several albums that do that... so I'm kinda glad he's got mellower stuff.
Its seems everytime he talks about songs and music he talks about the audience and their reaction to the music more than "I wanted to just rip it up right here man!" and I can tell... even though most
GUITAR players
might not like the "non-shred-satch" my friends who don't play guitar or any instrument at all seem to like his later albums more than his earlier ones...
...maybe they get bored? I dunno... so that's just something to think about I suppose.

I for one would LOVE to have the luxury of getting bored of that kind of technique.

Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM
I picked this up from the used CD store last week for $7.99. It's good. It's not great like Surfing or Extremist, but I'm enjoying it so far. Of course, if I had bought it new for $14.99, I might have a different opinion -lol.
Drew - Extremist is the newest complete album I have. I do have the 2 disk anthology from '03 that has 4 tunes from
Crystal Planet
on it (Ceremony, Crystal Planet, Raspberry Jam, and Love Thing), and I really like those songs. So is it worth buying CP, or are those the best 4 songs on it?

IMO those are the 4 best tracks on that album. But that's not to say the others aren't worth listening to
It's a great album from start to finish

Whether or not Joe used a cornford, JSX, Marshall or a pignose, Joe is still Joe no matter what. Personally, I've found the new album to be refreshing and completely different at the same time. I, for one, am enjoying the new album with no major complaints.
Jimmy
I just want some good songwriting and some great melodies. None of that is on the new album IMO. Just bland licks and improvised solos

"Revelation" doesn't have a good melody? Hmmm...

Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM
Well I got the new album today and actually could listen to it all the way through alone with the headphones on like I used to do when I was young.
I have to say it's great, it's back to Satch as I love him. It's much better than Super Colossal to me. I love most of the songs and like the ones I don't. I especially love Musterion, Andalusia, Overdriver and Come On Baby.
And to gunde there is a ton of melody why don't you listen.

Now with that I can totally agree. Just because someone doesn't do any show off speed riffs makes the album not bad. There are tons of melodies and variations in the songs.
