Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM

Thanks for posting that, hush.

I just saw the podcast, regarding 'Musterion'. It's a very deep piece. The chorus is mesmerizing. Amazing..

Hey, I can't see that third podcast when I go to Satriani.com. Probably has to do with the time zone.

Nor can I see the video teaser of Musterion. Can you?

Hey, my pre-ordered copy arrived in the post first thing this morning. Not sure what I make of the album yet.

its ok.... he's never topped FIABD as far as I'm concerned. there's been 1 or 2 standout tracks on each album since, but the albums have never stood out as a whole for me.

Really? I think he gets better and better, but doesn't really rehash things over and over like many other players. For example, Super Colossal was different and I liked it less than others but it wasn't just the same stuff as before. That I respect, even though I could be happy with many more tracks like Searching and Circles over and over I'm glad he continues to explore.

To me, he balances pefectly the idea of owning a signature sound in a genre but not just making the same thing over and over again.

I've got it, too, now. I haven't listened to every song yet, but it's incredible so far. I especially love Musterion.

I agree with Kotornut, regarding Joe's diversity. SC is possibly my favorite Joe album, though.

agreed. he does have some 'signature' licks that you will hear a lot, but his songwriting, which is the main focus, is constantly evolving. seems like he's been reinventing on each cd ever since fiabd, which honestly could be considered as a natural progression from surfing. after fiabd, he wanted a more simpler rock feel, so he worked with the bissonettes and stripped down his songwriting approach. and then he went even more stripped down with the self titled 'blues' cd. he gave up a lot of creative control to andy johns and the result was amazing imo. after that one, he went the complete opposite direction with the much misaligned engines of creation. not only complete control, but also blending electronica. this cd imo, was his most technical in terms of playing and composition.

the last 3 cds (strange beautiful music, is there love in space, super colossal) seem to show a consistant direction. i have to admit, i am not a fan of everything on these cds (especially is there love in space, which is my least favorite), but it seems as though i am liking his recent efforts more and more.

I think the playing is great, but I do not care for the songs at all. I think I understand what he's trying to accomplish with these tracks, but it just doesn't click for me.

Yeah the last three are my favs as well. SC was my least favorite of the newer ones however. The songs were beautiful but not as fun sounding as the others.

The thing I love about Satch and Gilbert too, is that the songs sound FUN to play or just enjoy. Most others, Vai included, don't do that for me. They just leave me thinking "Awesome" in a technical sense only. But, Satch, even though not the best technically, is always fun and makes me think "I love the guitar."

Paul Gilbert does this too by not acting artsy fartsy all the time about it. He could probably play anything you could ever ask but he still has time to make it fun. He still says awesome stuff like "What could be better than playing the electirc guitar?" and so on. He has a tremendously humble public image (can't speak for him privately) he seems to realize that his job is a dream one and that with that he has to take advantage of it. Plus I've emailed him and he's responed to me and been a really normal and cool guy. And he has an affinty for Japanese things and his wife is Japanese just like mine, and she also is a pianist like my wife. HEHEHE. I was married first though.

Both of them together remind me that this whole guitar thing is supposed to be fun. And most of us forget that. Guitar is first and formost FUN, and very lastly a competition. Competition has it's place even for guitar, but I think that recently that has dominated all the better aspects of guitar music.

Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM

The problem for me is that there doesn't seem to be very much songwriting on this new album. Just improvising over some kinda bland backing tracks.
I'm disappointed.

I totally agree. I'm only impressed by the last two songs, but everything else is a very watered-down version of Super Colossal, which even itself wasn't very good. He's fallen into the trap of boring blues rock over a backing track; he's really starting to sound like all the people who try to sound like him (ie every DiMarzio sound clip of a guy whose name you don't know.)
I really wish he would've just named the album "Musterion" like he said he would in the beginning. This new title is retarded. All the songs sounds like ACDC, and the ballads are so painfully familiar. I wish he would branch out.
Satch lost his spark a LONG time ago.
