Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM

Andy Timmons is the single best rock instrumentalist ever.
"Resolution" is a freakin masterpiece.

DT disapoints me to no end and Symphony X, to me, is a wannabe group.

I don't really consider DT metal. Petrucci is and maybe Portnoy but no one else is metal in that band. Some songs are good metal songs but the majority are just goofy progressive IMHO. I do have every album though

Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM

Kotornut, definitely grab a copy of Andy Timmons' "Resolution." Great disc, bluesy-shreddy instrumental rock with a ton of feel. This is from a guy who finds Guthrie Govan boring, too.

I was actually really surprised by the new Satch disc - to me it's easily the best thing he's done since Engines of Creation, although to be fair that's really a testament to how bad his last couple disks were (Love in Space had moments, but...).

My expectations were so low that for the first time ever I told myself I'd *cough*download*hack, cough* the album before I'd waste my money on it, but three tracks in I'd vowed to run across the street on my lunch break and pick it up. It's not his best technical album - a lot of the solos are pretty understated, and they're nice but they don't have the emotional drive that his best understated worlk (Always, Until we say goodbye...) has, but honestly the songwriting is so much better than anything else he's done this decade that I don't care.

The chorus for Overdriver is just epic. Revalation is pretty huge sounding, too. And the final track, Andalusia, is both a cool performance and has probably the best solo on the whole album.

Sure, I'll probably skip "I Just Wanna Rock" every time I listen to this, but I do the same for "Ya Go Gaak" yet I still love ALS... Maybe it's because I really expected to hate this album, but I was REALLY pleasantly surprised.

Also, is anyone else getting a huge Porcupine Tree vibe from this album?

Just got it and listening to it. By the sounds of people's opinions, I'm in for a little disappointment

Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM

Well, some people seem to be hoping for 'Surfing 2' or 'Flying 2'. If you do that, you'll be dissapointed, for sure.

But this album is a masterpiece. I don't think anyone here will argue with that, even though they might not like it.

I love this album. As I love everything Joe has released. It's just brilliant. My favorite tracks, I guess, would be 'Musterion', 'Overdriver' and 'Revelation'.

Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM

Joe's been on a bad streak lately, but of his recent albums this is easily the best. I don't want a surfing 2 or flying 2 either, just something new that challanges my expectations in the same way.

And "How boring CAN joe make an album?" isn't the sort of challange I had in mind when I first spun Super Collosal, lol.

I'm afraid I would argue with that. It's a solid enough album but masterpiece? Sorry, not in my opinion and I'm somewhat underwhelmed by it so far if I have to be honest.

With most of his previous offerings there's been at least one song, that on first listening has invoked a 'Wow!!' and have engraved themselves indelibly on my mind. Sadly that's not the case on this one and I'm hard pressed to remember any of the tracks an hour after listening to them. Even the ballads that he usually excels at sound stilted and lacking in something but I'm not sure I can put my finger on exactly what it is.

Before anyone jumps on my back can I just say that I'm a huge Satch fan, going to see him again next month and I had high hopes for this album but to date those hopes haven't been realised.

Re: SATCH'S NEW ALBUM

if you are a metalhead, then yes, you may be dissappointed. joe never really was a metal guy and has always has a huge pallet of influences to draw from. joe's 'problem' is that he creates music for himself primarily and not according to the expectations of his fans.

gotta say, i dug about half of super collossal and strange beautiful music (and only one song off of is there love in space), but every song on this new cd sounds amazing to me. i think his playing has really progressed and he has somehow managed to become even more lyrical in his phrasing. and the tone is amazing as well. those expecting any sort of shredfest should probably move on.

I feel this is his biggest asset, and the reason i enjoy everything he does.

The new album again is a journey to embark upon for me. I found Super Colossal took a few listens to appreciate where i felt Joe was going with it, and more importantly where the album took me personally and emotionally. I found with that album i understood the songs much better after seeing them performed live!!

I'm already finding things that connect in me on the new one, but again as he isn't into cramming the licks in to impress/show off, it takes more intelligent listening to unravel the moods and emotions evoked

I also seem to stand on a very small island when i say that i love Is There Love In Space!!!!!!!! There is some killer material on there

(bet y'all shocked i wrote an intelligent post for once )

I'm certainly not a 'metalhead' but I reserve the right to be disappointed nonetheless. Generally I prefer his more restrained and thoughful stuff (The Forgotten Part 2, The Meaning of Love, for example) but to my ears, there's nothing approaching this on the new album.

Plainly I, and several others on here are not intelligent enough to 'get it' then

Not quite what i was implying

I didn't mean you have to be intelligent to enjoy it, merely that it takes more thoughtful listening to rather than listening to a bunch of impressive licks!!

Whether each individual enjoys it is personal preference!!! I was merely sharing my own experience with music
