Satriani Live!

What do people thinks of Joe's new DVD?

Personally I prefer the set list on the San Francisco DVD, but the new DVD is good too and the special features are cool.

Great Joe, Horrific Camerawork, October 22, 2006
Reviewer: Michael Developer "amazon3748" (NY) - See all my reviews
3.5 Stars: I saw this on HDNET and decided to buy the DVD because it features excellent sound. But let's call it like it is. I feel that I should quit my job and go into musical camerawork and direction. Let's start with that portion. Satch is all instrumental so the parts where he's soloing intensely instead of playing the singnature riffs would probably be the single most important times to focus on Joe's playing. Only someone brain dead would pan to the crowd, go behind the band, take distant shots when this is occurring - but that is exactly what happens, especially during Surfing With The Alien, perhaps the signature song of this incredible artist. Pathetic. At least the sound quality is excellent. But Joe does discuss the fact that HD cameras are there and the effect of them - perhaps this is what gives much of the performance a "technical feel" or maybe it's just Eric Johnson's band backing him or a combo of the two. Songs are rushed a little and don't have the trademark rhythmic feel like on the albums. Always With Me Always With You didn't have that smooth, breathless beauty that it is on the album and too jazzed up for a live concert sound. The crowd seemed to enjoy the performance but weren't exactly overwhelmed, like the entire performance - with the exception of the last two songs which highlighted the performance - Crowd Chant and Summer Song. Those two really felt like Joe had finally settled down with the band and just belted it out and had fun instead of worrying about playing for the cameras, which you can see at times and aren't too subtle. This is why taking pieces of different shows is the best way to create a live DVD, you can't take the best parts of the concerts and splice them together. I don't think I've ever seen a show where I didn't think that this guy is the most incredibly talented soloist I have ever seen but this DVD only gets you part of the way there, thanks to inadequate planning, production, and camerawork.

Re: Satriani Live!

I saw the opening show here in Denver. I did a review on it. It was a really good high energy show. Seemed like Joe had revitalized a bit as I thought his last couple shows beofre this one were quite low energy. Like he was just out there going through the motions. But this show was different.....like the Joe of old

I pre-ordered from play.com and it arrived the saturday before it came out on Monday.

Like I said the SF DVD is better, I prefer Stu Hamm on the bass. Joe is looking his 50 years, pulls some very strange noodling faces.

I like Super Colossal as an album, its got some good songs and its interesting to see how Joe plays them. My biggest complaint though is there isn't a single song of Crystal Planet (which is my favourite Satch album)

can't always go by what the so called "reviews" say, many times they perceive things differently than a fan would, so I'd say buy it and make your own judgement of it! It's JS you can't really go wrong anyway...

Re: Satriani Live!

hm the G3 in japan or wherever (the one with petrucci) the camera work was shocking, petrucci would be pulling of some insane lick and the idiots zoomed in on his hand....may as well zoom in on his legs or his nose, who gives a toss about his hand, i want to see his fingers

Anyways, I like satch's new album, a lot of good riffs :P Comparing it to his older stuff (like surfing with the alien) imo i think his older stuff is better. I can still listen to the solo from Crushing Day and it will give me tingles down my back. Compared to his later stuff the soloing just isnt the same, it feels like he has just inserted too many random legato bits instead of getting some better material in there.
I think it was #10 on super collosal, there is an awsome buildup for a solo and to me it feels like he blows it

Still, he is a great player and i can't wait till he comes back to Australia

Re: Satriani Live!

I think Live! sux. Plain and simple.

I'm a huge Satriani fan but his latest album and this DVD truly show that he has fallen behind in every aspect of his musical craft.

His songwriting is boring, he has tried to get away from the usual RIFF-MELODY-SOLO-OUTRO structures generating songs that sound completely random.
His improvisation has become 100% lick based when he used to be the TOP melodic shredder out there.
His sound is horrendous, I just can't understand what he sees in those terrible Peavey amps , he should have stayed with Marshall.
His technique is way weaker than in the good ol' days (I wouldn't mind this if the above wouldn't be true).

I've closed the Satch chapter a few albums back already and I don't think I'll be buying any of his future releases anymore. I'd rather keep him in my mind as the best guitar player in the world (as he used to be) and not the boring musician he has become.

he's still a good guitarist. He's just evolved the way he wanted to...took his own direction. Cheer up old boy!!!

Re: Satriani Live!

It's really disappointing to hear that the camera work isn't good. Sadly, it sounds like the same things that happened on Live in SF, has reared it's ugly head again! There is nothing more FRUSTRATING, when at the crucial parts of Joe's playing the camera swings over to the bass player, or worse still, you get a backview of Joe.
I loved Joe's tone when he was using Marshall's, that's an aspect of Live in SF i really enjoyed, the sound and mixing quality of the disc.
I was really hoping the very bad choice of camera shots wouldn't happen in this release, but from what the Amazon reviewer has written, it seems like i might pass on buying this, unless i can rent it out from a video store first.
