Re: Seriously, how good is Paul Gilbert??

I've only seen/heard Space Ship One, but that was amazing. Love the guy's website too, with all the photoshops etc. He's a nutter.

I think it's cool that he does and maintains his own website . That he hasn't gotten in trouble with some of those photoshop pics .

I don't know if anyone here has heard his cover of 2 become 1 from the Spice Girls, but it kills. Especially when he throws in the solo from Stairway to Heaven. Later he fits Sweet Leaf in it too.

Re: Seriously, how good is Paul Gilbert??

Funny,

I also discovered Paul Gilbert only a couple of months ago. He is number 1 on my playing list now. And yes, it is good pop-FM rock on his solo albums with killer guitar. That's what I love about him. As he says, a few chords can take you very far, and he's definitaly doing more than a few chords, without being shreddy or boring on his solo albums.

Check out Burning Organ, Flying Dog, I actually do also love Space Ship One !

Burning organ is a GREAT album but the rest........ pretty boring IMHO. Last week I bought his last DVD "Space ship live" and it's horrible.

He plays great but the songs are boring. I don't like that punky-pop style.

Re: Seriously, how good is Paul Gilbert??

On the topic of his guitar, i tried a PGM guitar not long ago because i thought a fixed bridge would be a good idea, but i'm so used to floyd's that when i bended notes i sounded terrible!

I'm so used to bending harder because the floyd compensates that i sounded like a castrated cat

Funny you should say that. I've only recently got my PGM200 (fixed bridge). Bending notes on a fixed bridge - it's cool, I can do way crazy bends and be really precise. Very sweet. Think I'm not going to play with a floyd for a long time now. Too much hastle. I've got way too much to learn before I really need to use a floyd... Got to admit that they're damn fun though...

Re: Seriously, how good is Paul Gilbert??

I wish he'd come to Seattle or Portland. I'd go check him out. He's a rare combination of flawless technique and taste. His staccato is the cleanest I've ever heard, and it's HARD to play staccato as fast as he does.

Re: Seriously, how good is Paul Gilbert??

Paul Gilbert and Steve Vai have been my favorite guitarists for a while.

Yngwie comes in just after him.

Paul Gilbert has to be the best at playing difficult fast picking stuff. His instructional videos are so fun to watch, because he's very silly and does lots of corny and witty and the background videos are always completely random, like he'll be talking and in the background is a massive skillet frying eggs and bacon! LOL! I love it! Or he'll be shredding in a pancho while crusing down a mexican highway, again. . .love it.

If you like his tone, I would suggest getting yourself a guitar with PAF pros AND a dimarzio single coil in the middle, and try out a Laney tube amp.

I have an 80's AOR tube amp, and I can get a great PG tone, it has that same laney twang as his new GH100s, its pure plug and play rock and roll. I highly reccommend this small, underrated, unknown company.

Excellent GP!! very clean and fast at the same time!!, and thats is very important at least for me. great compositor too!
He has a lot of instructional videos and you can learn a lot from there.
and besides he is a very nice and patient person personally.
GREAT!
