Re: Seriously, how good is Paul Gilbert??

Headsound, sell me your PGM200 lol

I just got the best of Paul Gilbert (got all his other stuff) just for the Gilbert Hotel CD. How cool is that? I already own his other albums, but he actually put something out that'd make a guy like me buy his "best of" album.

God I'm such a Gilbert-fanboy, lol

I've loved Paul since I first heard him on the Blacksheep album from way, waay back (which I still have on vinyl somewhere by the by...). But you know, he's on of those player's who I admire and learn from, but don't want to sound like. His articulation is amazing and his songwriting, especially on his later solo stuff is awesome, and he's certainly far more "rock" in approach in his playing than either Vai or Satriani..and his sense of humor is awesome...ever see the stuff he did on Japanese TV with Marty Friedman with that wacky late night rock gameshow?

eleven thousand notes ain't my cup of tea, I prefer his racerx and mr big stuff than his solo stuff, to me he's got to stop singing IMHO

I think Paul's voice is, as Randy Jackson would say, "Alright, Dog..". He's got a better voice than Vai or Satriani, both of whom should stay far, far away from a mic...

+1 except Satch singing thru the telephone on "The Phone Call" on Flying In A Blue Dream was kinda cool... not great vocals, just kinda cool...

I think Paul's actually a far better singer than half of the rock bands out today, and of course the music is 1000 times better That's one of the cool things about him, he shreds and has a decent voice.

He's the best.

I like him better than Vai or Satch, because he's more easy to listen.
He's funny to watch, he has a KILLER tone and touch+feel.

He's bends are great too. I love him and his music.

It's funny that all my friends hate his tone and singing... :/

Re: Seriously, how good is Paul Gilbert??

Well, you know, with so many carbon copy shredders out there, when you hear Paul, you know it's him. Same goes for guys like Kotzen, Howe, MacAlpine. I don't neccessarily dig Paul's note choices all the time and his tone is a bit one dimensional for me on alot of stuff, but he has his own voice, which is the MOST important thing..there are so many guys out there who just stream out runs and sweeps like machines and I sit there and say "But what are you trying to say? What are you trying to make me feel, other than "Damn, you can play fast...", which lasts about 30 seconds and then I say "next"..

Re: Seriously, how good is Paul Gilbert??

I love Gilbert he's a great player, but in referance to your jazz idea, I've deffinatly warmed to jazz after spending 2 years at leeds college of music, im 2 weeks away from finishing my 2nd year, and i can't wait to finish entirely.

I remember walking in as a guitar hero wannabe shred head with more whammy tricks and licks up his arse than a dead walrus, now i play a fender strat with PAF's and play in jazz bars on a night, but dont worry i still rock out a lot

But you tend to find as your studying music full time the blues and rock soon becomes really unsatisfying but it doesnt mean i dont love it because i do.

ps, vai's the daddeh though.

As other guitarists have said to me in the past "you'll get to a point where your musical understanding gets better, and all of a sudden you'll find that you really like jazz". Dunno if that's true, but I do wonder if one day I'll listen to Vai or Satch and think "Woah, that's a funky melody" and listed to it as music, rather than now where I listen to most of their music as "cool things to play on the guitar". Funny thing though. Listening to Vai's early stuff with Dave Lee Roth is much more fun to listen to and is essentially "Rock". The band context does seem help PG, but I'm wondering again if it's just my inexperienced ears the make PG a nicer listen to than Vai.

But then, what do I know?

Re: Seriously, how good is Paul Gilbert??

Gilbert is awesome! I've been a fan of his for almost 20 years (wow, I'm getting old -lol), since Second Heat came out. I have his Racer X stuff (old and new) and the first two Mr. Big's but I haven't heard a single thing from his solo albums. It sounds like Burning Organ is a good one to start with. I've only seen his first video, Intense Rock, but it is still the best instructional video I have seen (and I have a few!). By best I mean it gave me stuff that I could actually apply to my own playing/ideas, not just "here's the solo from my song .....". And he's entertaining, he keeps it interesting. My neighbor is moving and gave me the first V. Moore video, which I hadn't seen in over 15 years, and it is so dry and boring (but has some good bits in it).

Yeah, it came out Tuesday but I haven't found it in any of the local stores yet. Has anyone picked it up? What's the word on it? I'm guessing it's awesome.
