Sex and Religion

The more I listen to this album, the better it becomes. At the time of release there was a lot of criticism but I think it features some of Vai's most brilliant and diverse work ever.
Touching Tongue's is an amazing piece of music.
Anyone agree?

Also one of the greatest vocal performances ever.

Re: Sex and Religion

It's always been my favourite Steve Vai album. When it first came out I loved it. The "odd at the time" vocals. The crazy dissonance in PIG. After Passion And Warfare (which I also loved), I was shocked, surprised and excited when I heard Sex And Religion.

Re: Sex and Religion

I really didn't like it all. Touching Tongues and Rescue Me are the only things I liked on it.

Re: Sex and Religion

At first I was very WTF about this album but after a while it started to really grow on me. I like it more than most Vai albums now. A real tour de force with an incredible band. I was very disappointed when Vai didn't continue on with Devin Townsend. He's a phenomenal vocalist and musician.

Re: Sex and Religion

It is my favorite Vai album. I saw him on that tour and I was blown away at how great Devin was. His singing sounded perfect and he traded solos with Steve on several songs. I wish Steve would consider doing another cd with Devin.

Re: Sex and Religion

Touching Tongues blew me away from the first time that I heard it. I love the main guitar riff for Sex and Religion - so simple and effective.

I saw him on this tour too and it was by far the most amazing Vai show I have seen.

I saw that tour too and it was a wickedly great show...although I will admit that I prefer Vai's instrumental music over anything he's done with vocals (but i prefer instrumental music in general) but I do think that Vai teaming up with Devin again would be cool because I do think Devin is very talented - a bit of a mad genius perhaps...

Re: Sex and Religion

Devin is amazing. I've recently picked up the entire Strapping Young Lad catalog and I have most of his other solo work.

He might be the most metal dude ever. And he does hippy music too. How odd.

Re: Sex and Religion

Totally love Devin Townsend's music. His relatively recent live DVD box set is loaded with seriously awesome content.

Re: Sex and Religion

oops... forgot to talk about S&R!

Overall, it's pretty awesome. It's a bit uneven in production and writing and it doesn't really seem as cohesive as an album maybe should.

"Tongues" is maybe my favorite 7th track. "Just Cartilage" is very cool and a vision what might have been someday. Oh well.

As much as I love Devy, the last track is probably my favorite for singing and vocals.
