Re: Shawn Lane

On a side note, Shawn's very humble attitude actually contributed to his lack of attention. He was so nice that he just couldn't comprehend the absolute competitiveness of the music industry.

Re: Shawn Lane

Nice story NYK, thanks for sharing it.

One thing I've always admired from Shawn's life story is that he spent two years of his life almost totally isolated just working on taking his technique up to another level. Gosh, where he took it to! It is the spirit of an artist trying to refine his art and become better at what he does. I take my hat off to anyone who shows such dedication and commitment.

Shawn will always be missed.

Yeah, maybe we should just agree to disagree in advance here, and skip the rips on the departed and each other.

Cool forum. Absolutely tons of Shawn Lane media to download (after you've got 10 posts!). I have GB's of stuff already.

Yeah, I'm going to talk to Bill Oliver about that Shawn footage tomorrow when I see him. Apparently he still hasn't gotten his computer set up yet.

Wohoo, that sounds cool I tried to get cds of him in the internet (y'all know where ), but I never suceeded, cause they were always getting too expensive for a poor person as me I heard some things of him, when I did not know about shredding and was really like: "Hell, what's that?" And some months later, when I got to know some very good guitarists here around, I was suprised, that they did not even know him... I did not meet many persons who do.

Re: Shawn Lane

I'd like to pick up the CD as well; it's certainly more expensive than most of my other CDs.

Just don't expect full-on shred albums. Some people listen to the SL solo albums and expect to hear a guy trying to melt his fretboard. If that's what you like, listen to Malmsteen or something. What you do get is some beautifully constructed music, and that's difference with Shawn Lane and any other guitar wizard -- Shawn always put melody first. He does all the technical stuff too, but he uses is sparingly and only when the song calls for it. You can also expect something a little different. Tracks like Piano Concertino; Transformation of Themes, and Powers of Ten; Suite -- these tracks prove Shawn's incredible talent for orchestration and composing on piano.

It might take you quite a few listens before you "get it", but I think you will get it at some point. Hopefully sooner rather than later. Some stuff is pretty "instant", such as the first 4 tracks on PoT. They are great songs. The album switches completely by track 5, and then changes again a couple of tracks later.

Re: Shawn Lane

didn't get it. Tried. Sounded like someone is tuning a guitar and recorded it.
Guitar tone was brutal, sounded like some bells played at a polka festival.

Not for me.
