Re: Shawn Lane

Shawn's first demo for Mark Varney, 1983. Unfortunately it sounds like someone tuning up!

As Dee said, don't expect all out, scorching, metal shred throughout the albums. Shawn's more fusion than anything, but he does manage to cut loose on many tracks. (I love the solo on "Not Again", the first track on PoT)

Re: Shawn Lane

Not again has an amazing solo!

Get You Back is probably my favourite SL track of all.

PS: Wade, have you heard that early demo of Illusions with vocals on it?

Re: Shawn Lane

The ending of Rules of the Game is a case study in vibrato and feel as good as anything Gilmour or Beck ever played. The live clip of Hardcase is just mindnumbing. Find a youtube user named Willijay and you'll get some great clips of Shawn Lane, Di Meola, McLaughlin,De Lucia. Find the clip with the outro of All along the Watchtower or the clip of the Sneaky Pete's gig. I heard Shawns music back in the early eighties from a friend that went to GIT and traded all kinds of underground guitar stuff. People would get pissed off when they'd ask me what I thought of Yngwie...having heard Lane,Holdsworth and Di Meola I was'nt that impressed by just fast playing over very basic chord progressions. If you took the guitar out of Shawns music or Holdsworth or any of the truly great players..it would still be interesting well written music. Taking the guitar out of most "shredders" music is like taking the meat out of a barbecue....you end up with nothing.

Re: Shawn Lane

Willjay is a cool guy. I speak to him on the Memphis Monster forums sometimes. His Shawn Lane collection is VAST! I have a Sneaky Pete's clip on my computer. Is it the one where he's playing jazz?

Re: Shawn Lane

Dee, I've heard that version of Illusions. It's very good!

Anyways, it feels so weird passing by certain clubs/restaurants/bars here in Memphis that Shawn played at every weekend. I love sitting in the building where that clip of "Not Again" and "Unknown Number 2" (I need to ask Jimmy what the name of it is) were made in 1987 at Bombay Bicycle Club (now Bosco's Squared Brewery). It feels so eerie, but in a good way. It's hard to describe.

Re: Shawn Lane

Someone suggested that "unknown #2" might be a Scott Henderson or a Mike Stern song. I haven't heard either of those guys play it, but I only have 2 Mike Stern albums. I do have all the Tribal Tech stuff, though. I'd love to find out what it really is.

I know Shawn played "Mood Swings" by Mike Stern at the Bombay gig, but that was the only Mike Stern song I can confirm he played.

Re: Shawn Lane

Well both CD's arrived and I have listened to them both at least three times …

I have very little good to say about either... both CD’s have moments where the music is OK... but these are few and far between and mostly the tracks sound like very repetitive bad MIDI elevator music… I would not recommend these CD’s to anyone before I would recommend Brett Garsed, Pedro D’Andrea, Tony MacAlpine, Shawn Baxter, Guthrie Goven, Rob Balducci etc. etc. etc….

Re: Shawn Lane

OK, I'll shoot him an email.

Just to be clear, they are Powers of Ten and Tri-Tone CD's, both new or good condition?
